HI, Having new sails made up and new furler in Germany with Lee Sails. He has recommended a Furlex 208s but when I read the Furlex website it tells me the 208s is for masthead rigs up to 7.5t displacement. My boat is a Contest 36 ketch and 8.2 tons dry! Probably 10 tons fully loaded. (424ltrs of water tanks etc) He tells me that because it is a ketch it is perfectly adequate as the mast is shorter and the foretriangle smaller than a sloop. I can't seem to find what the difference is between the 208s and 308s. I like things to be on the 'oversize' side as that is what I feel the boat is all about. If it apears I would be better with the 308s then I might consider the more upmarket Reckman Furler from Hamburg - superb engineering! The price is pretty much the same for theirs compared with the 308s. What you thinking???

300S is bigger and sturdier...

The 300S range is just bigger and sturdier than the 200S range. Virtually everything is upgraded in size. The drum is bigger (216mm vs 186mm diam); the foil is chunkier (39x27mm vs 31x21mm).

Although you're right that Selden rate the 208S for masthead rigs up to 7.5 tonnes, they also quote 8.5 or 9 tonnes for the 208S on fractional rigged boats, and I guess this is why your sailmaker says it'll be OK.

Reckmann furlers look good, but I've no experience of them. Their RS2000/10 is about the same size componentry as the Furlex 200S; whilst the Reckmann RS2000/20 is a closer match to the Furlex 300S range. Is it the RS2000/20 you've priced?

Re: 300S is bigger and sturdier...

Hi Pvb, It was the RS2000/10 that I priced up at the Hamburg boat show 3,300 euro which includes a new forestay. Reckman mention nothing about the displacement of the boat only the length of forestay and boat. The 10 is suitable for my boat. Dunno what to do really. I like the Reckman, the quality of workmanship is superb! It's a work of art in the world of furlers at this level. The only thing I don't like with it is the furling line is spliced to a thinner line so as to fit on the drum. Would probably always keep a spare just in case. The Reckman is a grand more than the 208s but about the same price as the 308s. The gran is not as important as the right gear though. Especially as this year is a big year for Cocoro! New engine, sails, heater, upholstery, instruments. Might have to use her four weekends this year instead of the usual three to justify it all !!!

Re: 300S is bigger and sturdier...

Well, the RS2000/10 is about the same size as the Furlex 200S range, so if you thought that the Furlex 200S wasn't substantial enough you'd really need to go for the Reckmann RS2000/20.

Guess one consideration is that you only buy it once, so best to get it right.

I have 300 series on my 35 footer mast head rig with a 125% genoa and have found furling the sail so much easier than the 200 series I would suggest you pay the extra and you will foget about price after the first windy day.I am just about to order main and genoa from Lee sails, are you happy with them? pm if you are interested in MY experience with them.

Hi Bluevelvet, are you saying you have also had a 200s furlex and feel the 300s works better? or you assume the 200s would not be as good. - I have only just ordered the sails from Lee Sails in Germany as my boat is around there for the winter. They have been to measure up the boat already and took their time in doing so, explaining everything they were doing. This week they visit again to trim the rigging and measure the forestay. The price seems ok although I don't have any experience to say otherwise. It is a tough one choosing the furler. The Reckman is reassuringly expensive and so well made. The Furlex follows the same style (integral tensioner, integrated with the forestay etc) but I have never warmed to it's, well to it's look! Am I being too superficial? It just looks like a piece of kit that has evolved by bits being added to it each year....if you know what I mean? Ease of use is important though and in a blow I want to know the furler will furl without much effort and quickly. If the next size up will do this for me then I have to go for the 300s because I could not justify the 4k euros that the 2000/20 Reckman would cost! We shall see!

Swanny yes had both one was on discus33 and was over powered at times admitedly I like strong wind sailing, my new yacht has the 300 and more sail area and it is noticely easier, both newish units so comparisions are fair.John
