Hello there,

I winder if someone knows what is the difference between icom M71 selling in Euorope and Icom M72 sellind in USA.
I looked in the manuals and they look the same?
I ask because I wonder if I will have any problem if I buy M72 from US and use it in Eu.
Thanks

The EU version will have to be CE marked, and technically a non CE marked radio is illegal, and probably won't be supported if you have any warranty issues here. Lots of very long contentious threads on this subject in the past.

Its funny howeveryone latches onto this which is actually of lower importance.....What is important is that the radio used on british yachts is TYPE APPROVED..

It is possible to buy VHF radios with CE which are NOT type approved...

CE marking covers the less important aspects.. Ie the radio might not kill you...Doesnt necesarily mean it will do what you want /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Check the spec of the M72 and see what is says about being capable of being used on International frequencies. Our yankee friends use the VHF frequencies in a different manner in their home waters so some frequencies we use as duplex they use as simplex . Moreover their radios default to 1 watt power on certain frequencies including 67 . You will have to get M1 and M2 programmed in.

An american set might be OK for back up but unless it will lock onto international frewquency settings I would not recomend one for use in UK waters. It is highly unlikely you will be fined by Ofcom .... but who knows ????
