What is the black box with pipe on the right side of this photo?

I'm sure the answer to this is staring me in the face (literally) but this photo of my bilges shows the bilge pump float switch and the bilge pump itself plus the black box on the right with the grey pipe connected to it.

I'm sure that it's not a through-hull of any kind but what is it?

It has no writing on it of any kind as far as I can see.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks

Richard

It looks like a strum box (suction) from another, possibly a remote, manual bilge pump.

A common belt and braces arrangement for pumping out bilges.

I would be more worried about that box to the left that controls the pump , is it waterproof :encouragement:

How about this:

Stops debris entering suction hose Fitted non-return valve prevents drain back Removable straining plate for easy cleaning Available in top entry (for deeper bilges) or side entry (shallower bilges) Suitable for 1” (25mm) and 11/2” (38mm) hose Is fitted at end of suction hose deep in bilges (allowing maximum amount of water to be pumped from bilges

Wow - that was so quick VicS - and, of course, absolutely correct I'm sure!

I really should have been able to work that out for myself but I had convinced myself it was something to do with the electric pump!

Many thanks

Richard

No reason why it couldn't be. Strum boxes are also fitted to electric pump inlets just to get as much as possible sucked up. (I think he fancies you Vic, BTW!) :D
