Hi everyone!
I'm new and need some help.
Many of you racers out there use them! I'm wanting to know the name of those small triangle of sail cloth that owners put on their genoa luff foils to stop them chaffing and making a noise, after they have been sailing.
They are attached at the head, fed though the foil groove, hoisted with the genoa halyard, with another line tied to the tack, down to the fore deck and the clew tied to the mast somewhere. Some names have come to light, a flopper stopper, force10 sail, flappy thingy!
There has to be a proper name for them.

We used to call ours 'The No. 27 (genoa)', but I've heard it called (head)foil preventer or (head)foil restraint.

Sounds as if you need some "luff groove tape" from any sailmaker, with a grommet at top and bottom.

I can't see any reason to make a small sail though; windage ???

I do not have the technical name either, but the idea of using the small triangle of cloth attached to about a metre of luff tape is to avoid the restraining cord applying a point load (or two point loads) to the foil. These things are very small, much less than 1sq.m. so the advantage in preventing the foil rattling about on the forestay wire outweighs the windage. Most sailmakers provide one when making the first suit for a racing boat that is going to be taking its headsails off.

Whats its name

It is about 30cm triangle, its used for preventing the foil rattling and making any wear on the inside of the foil. I have made many of them for customers but do not know what the known name is.
