Not so much a where is it - too easy - but a what is it?

Here's one you don't see ver often - anyone an idea what it is?
Not Hespere - the one alongside her (second one from the front).

At a guess I'd say French. Definitely a long-distance racing machine. Aluminium? Maybe a one-off?

The harbour looks like Ramsgate though I could be wrong on all counts, it woudn't be the first time.

It is Ramsgate, still the only Harbour I know with a beach inside the breakwater walls......
As for the boat? dunno, looks serious though

Coincidentally there's a similar-looking machine berthed here in Auckland. Tho I'd say it's almost certainly not a kiwi design. Looks like a classic 80s offshore racer. maybe with a touch of IOR give the hull profile. If I find out what mine is I'll let you know.

Likely a Peterson, maybe 40' - 42'? And a production cruising version of his tonners - Moonshine (UK Admirals Cup Team 1977) was a late variant of this group of Peterson boats.

She's got a full bridge deck aft of the companionway hatch, with the mainsheet traveller over it. Plus wheel steering and she's been "cruisified" with a cutter rig.

But not sure.

Very close

Now there's a man who knows his boats.

Contessa 43 - one of 15 built (1982)
Moonshine was the first one of the first batch of 5 - built to be raced. She's one of the 7 cruisers built.

The correct answer, however, was: our next boat!
Some ifs & buts still remain - survey & sale of Yanita to go through.
She sails like a dream, but the interior likes like a mad axe man had a go. Mrs Yanita not that impressed. Still need an estimate for the woodwork.

I must be mad - just finished one project; ready to jump into another. Eyes wide shut. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Where do we take it from here?

Neil,

Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love Yanita. Three years of hard work, worry and a lot of money... She is now as I have always wanted her to be. Extremely comfortable, all modcons and very nice to sail. If it was just up to me, I wouldn't dream of selling her. There are, however, other factors to consider.

1. It's always been our intention to live aboard when I retire (4rs, 4 months & 9 days now). Sold the idea to Mrs Yanita a while ago, and she's up for it. Of late, she wants a "bigger" boat.
2. Brigitte tends to get seasick when things get lumpy - anything above a gentle 3-4 Bft and I'm pretty much on my own. Don't mind when we're just coastal hopping, but longhaul would be impossible. There's also the fact as far as I'm concerned things don't get "interesting" till we have a 5 or 6 over deck. I love to "feel" the power of the wind & sea. Yanita handles this very well, but if half the crew is laid up it sort of spoils it. Don't think the marriage, or dream of liveaboard cruising would survive.
3. So while I don't think we need anything bigger, we do need something heavier.
So this means pre-1990. The Contessa (1982) is 13 GRT - 50% of which is ballast.
4. As you know we keep Yanita in Belgium - there's quite market for Etaps in Holland & Belgium. People know what we have done to the boat. Quite a few expressed an interest in Yanita should we ever decide to sell. Got two "open offers" in for her. Yanita was never meant to be an investment, but I tend to make a nice profit.
5. The Contessa may not happen - subject to survey. I also need a professional opinion on how much it would cost to make her "liveable" down below. We're also looking at another boat (a 1986 Oyster) which seems to be in first class nick. Roughly same price, slightly smaller, but with all the latest equipment.

So, if you're interested, keep an eye on the website. I'll have another update in a few days.

Re: Where do we take it from here?

The boat looks very nice, and I am sure is a real sailors boat, but I think you may have serious problems with her with your family. The lack of view outside from within means that liveaboard wil be very boring, and this will also tend to increase problems of mal de mer.

Ypur decision (obviously) but although my heart would say "what fun" my head would be looking for a different compromise that would improve chances of SWMBO agreeing to the long distance plans.

anyway I dont reckon she has enough hulls for serious liveaboard/long distance work /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Where do we take it from here?

As Rob says, if she is the 1977 Admiral's Cup "Moonshine", which was a Contessa 43 then she could not have been built in 1982?? Sailed by Rogers in the British team (and was fastest boat - think the team also won). Maybe "deraced" in '82 perhaps?

If same boat then maybe you can get a discount for another 5-6 years older and for having been hard raced /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I never claimed that she IS Moonshine - just that Moonshine was the very first Contessa 43. This one was built as racer/cruiser.
Looked at two over the past WE (one 1984 & this one 1982) - interior completely different. Even the engine & positioning thereof.

Re: Where do we take it from here?

Your post could sort of be read as if it was. Anyway, I did not mean any harm, so best of luck with her and hope turns out ok in the survey.
