I have just scraped off the old A/F layers and a very dark brown hard layer which was directly on top of the grp. As the boat is 28 years old, what should I apply to the hull before the A/F coats?
You may well have removed existing Epoxy by scraping off the dark brown layer. If you want to apply new Epoxy ( I would) you need to lightly abrade the whole hull and apply your chosen epoxy (there are many but Gelshield is common) in accordance with makers instructions. Buy two colours and apply alternately and you will see what you have done more easily. Gelshield recommend 6 coats. Any number is better than none though.
It will you know! I do agree that it is better with a primer though. The primer is actually agressive and etches through the shiny surface and any residual release agent that might be present, but degreasing followed by light sanding works OK too.... The primer is usually recommmended as most people are reluctant to sand their bottoms to rough up the nice shiny GRP....
