Its just that I met with someone who is buying an identical boat who has been informed that his has them (whatever they are) and I started to feel left out.

Can't be sure but I think exhaust brakes only apply to trucks. A restriction can be applied to the exhaust to increase the braking effect of the engine.

Either I'm completely wrong, in which case sorry, or this person is buying a Fairline Corniche with wheels !

OK thanks Chris I will check about the wheels but it seems unlikely.

Whatever Peter's Corniche has its not fair because mine doesn't seem to have it......

I'm not really clear what they are but they do exist outside the trucking world. I have AD31s and was told recently that my exhaust brakes were not operating. As a part of the overhaul underway, they're being repaired. So, you probably have them and don't know it!

I think your'e being wound up Nick. Exhaust Brakes are a supplementary braking system used to help slow a road vehicle. This slowing power is achieved by restricting the flow of exhaust gasses and increasing back pressure inside the engine. This increased back pressure creates resistance against the pistons in the engine, slowing the crankshaft's rotation and ultimately helping to slow the vehicle. Its engine braking, but with a bit of applied technology.

So err....boats....errr - no!

OK perhaps I have got the terminolgy wrong...

Clue.... Something that is mounted close to the turbo that may help reduce smoking etc

You're not being wound up, I just can't explain exactly what they do. You're correct, they are something to do with smoke and are at the front of the engine next the turbo.

Thanks as that what I was told today so I will be on the case asap as I still feel I can reduce smoke a bit.

However I am easy to wind up on most things teccy.....

Yep, agreed.

We had a Volvo engineer from RK marine on our boat last week, the exhaust brake is there to reduce smoke when the engines are cold. He also followed that up by saying, a very good idea on paper, however a load of B*&^x in reality.

He said if they ever fail, do not waste your money repairing them, just remove them as the new volvo engines no longer have them so there is not gain to be had by keeping them. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

They are nothing to do with performance.

My new boat has a TMD31A which is , i believe, exactly the same block as yours but only rated at 100hp. Also, I only have one and not two like your Corniche....
Now, I could get quite paranoid about this..after all you have two and i only have one, and my one is only half as powerful as either one of your two.....or to put it another way you have 4 times as much power available as I do.
On a logarithmic scale of ratio of availability to aggravation,this may also account for why you seem to have 4 times as many things to worry about as I do. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif


Now, aboiut the exhaust brakes....as i understand it they provide back pressure in the exhaust flow at lower revs which is intended to assist in some way with the turbocharger at lower engine revs. Thats what I was told anyway and I think I also read it in the engine users guide. Once the revs get up above 2000 or so it ceases to have any effect and the turbo kicks in at 2500 i believe.

The main thing is that it seems to work so i am leaving well alone.

I womnder if it might do us both good to swop boats for a season or two? That way you would have less to worry about and I could have a bloody good time thrashing around the solent and growing old disgracefully...much better than worrying mate ! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Have you tried patches to help with the smoking, Nick? You stick them on the injector pumps, to reduce the demand for diesel.

Sounds like the smoke limiters, they reduce the amount of diesel going into the engine until the turbos r blowing hard enough 2 supply enough air. If they don't drop out then u end up with a gutless engine, otherwise u get loads of smoke at low boost.
