There are GPS mice with cables and bluetooth, for PDA orPC,But what are they???

If i buy a Garmin 72 i get a gps which will display speed possition and rolling road.
I can put in my way points,

it has a list of light beacons and macdonalds and with that and a paper chart i can hope to sail from a to b without finding any of the very hard rocks by touch!

The 72 has a very small screen

If i buy a gps mouse just as if i buy a garmin 72 neither with maps,

What will i see on my PC screen, what information does it display??????????????

If i have both on the navigation table both on would both be able to show the same information?

A GPS mouse is just a GPS receiver - when plugged into a laptop or Pocket PC (or infa red'ed or bluetoothed) with charting software it can be used like GPS plotter but on a larger screen.

As it is being used with PC software, you can also overlay tide, weather, and plenty more information

you mean when i buy a mouse install the softwear for it, it will display a compass rose boats speed possition and line which breaks up as i go off course??

It dose seem a good idea to have one,as any laptop or palm has a larger screen than a GPS.

The fact it's called a mouse is because it resembles a computer mouse in shape. The functionality is totally different!
As said before, it's just a GPS receiver. It outputs (most models) NMEA messages containing position information. It will not store waypoints, it can be configured in a very limited fasion. The strength of the solution lies in the software running on the connected computer or PDA (Ipaq). You could compare it with an external GPS antenna on a dedicated chartplotter. Also they are pretty cheap. Most work via an USB-cable, some use a Bluetooth (wireless) connection. This however means they have an internal (rechargeable) battery that will be depleated in less then a 24 hrs. The USB version is powered via the USB cable.

I was talking toa guy the other day who has his notepad set up with bluetooth GPS but when you add up the costs of the notepad and blue tooth GPS and software. i would just prefer to buy a reasonable hand held as back up to my fixed GPS.
I am not particularly conversant with this technology but its seemed to be a pricy alternative with all sorts of concerns about care on board and functionality but then we all have our different preferences.

Regards.

Peter.

You have gone for the soft wear package. All i want is an SD card or PDA connection mouse for my Dell X30 (648 processor)

Is there anything that will disply position speed and rolling road thats all i want.

Im not taking my laptop aboard as its harder to protect, and with the Dell i can still read the paper.

What do you think of an ICOM 718? I havent seen one yet but is it much larger than the 706??

Is there any downloadable softwear that would be useful for GPS on pda??
