What is a \'chill\' ?

I always thought this was an old wives tale - when you went outdoors as a kid, with Mother saying "Wear a coat or you will catch a chill" . Apart from getting very cold, I have never really understood what it meant in practice.

This past weekend I got really cold working above decks and catching the SE wind, even with two fleeces on, and have felt pretty grim since then. Struggled to keep warm, even indoors, very drowsy on and off during the day, and a dose of the 'thr'penny bits.'

Maybe I've caught a chill after all - whatever one of those is.

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

Using all the diagnostic skills from my basic first aid course I would say its more likely to be caused by the dodgy sausage sarny you had to warm up after getting cold. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I should be painting and antifouling the boat this morning but Youngest is off school with exactly the symptoms you describe. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

Sounds more like you have caught a bug of some ilk.
Although really cold dry weather is not ideal conditions for bugs to survive in, but it is also the most vulnerable condition for humans.
I think you need a half bottle of amber nector heated to just below boiling point and taken with pure lemon juice and honey and a couple of paracetamol before going to bed, which will help you to sweat any thing out.
Get well soon.
Better still if you can get some, a wee drop of Poteen. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

My understanding is that it is an old wive's tale. Mind you some old wives (but certainly not all of them) did know what they were talking about. Probably what happens is that in getting extremely cold you lower your resistance to attack by compromising your immune system, so catch whatever is around more easily than otherwise.

Mind you, some old wive's tales can be self fulfilling prophesies, because if you believe something nasty will happen it is probably more likely. My father always believed that he would catch a cold if he got his feet wet and lo and behold; he always did. Except when he wanted to get them wet of course.

The breath of the wind of its wings is terrible. It is a chill wind. Nay, but it is not cold it is hot. I am choking. Pour water on my hands. Give me snow to eat. Loosen my mantle. Quick quick! - Salome /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

Seems like you've alerady been on the half bottle of amber nectar mentioned by Clyde_Wanderer !

Its days like these when I regret being self-employed /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Could quite happily have stayed under the duvet instead of trekking up to the smoke to earn a crust.

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

On the very very rare occasions I ever feel cold, I really get 'chilled' and it takes at least half a day to feel really warm again - no explanation, just a fact maybe my blood will thin down(another old wife's tale) as I approach the three score and twenty.

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

Indeed an old wives tale.

However, like many old wives tales that are dismissed, when it was studied it was found that people who got cold did end up with a greater chance of catching a cold.

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

I often thought of this when doing the winter series dinghy racing wearing a wet suit that was often wet and we were frequently cold.

What suprised me was that we never suffered any colds until we were not racing but stuck in warm stuffy offices!!

I did /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Don't know if there's a bug going round but that's exactly the way I felt so the duvet won /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
My understanding is that reducing the body temperature makes the immune system less effective so any bugs around find it easier to get in and make you ill . Obviously I'm no doctor so that's just my understanding but it does seem to work like that
Hope you feel better soon ( and hope I do too /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif )

Hope you feel better soon
It was probably worth the cold though to fit your wide screen TV as I know how much you like them on board
What else would you be using BNC connectors for

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

Well, it has a genuine entry and description in a medical dictionary, and it seems to fit...

avalookere... chill /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: What is a \'chill\' highland accent required

I'm reminded of the highlander Hamish, whose brother Angus went to London to work. After some weeks Hamish got a phone call saying that "Angus had taken a chill and died". His reply was "I canna believe that - Angus could tak a gallon an still be sober".

Re: What is a \'chill\' ?

Me too - after our very pleasant frostbite cruise! TV on board helps pass those long cold winter evenings on board and the local forecasts are useful.
