Was asked recently what I wanted for Christmas and having reached number 54 when the prices fell below £20k !! my suggestions began to be taken seriously......... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Actually, what I would like is a Multi-tool. You know a Leatherman or gerber or similar.
Must come with a pouch, be user friendly with cold, numb hands, stainless of course etc etc

What is thought to be the ideal multi-tool for yachties?

Thanks

Jaba

A cheap and cheerful one, so you don't cry when you drop it over the side?

Absolutely with Alan d. My favourite tool is a pair of slip jaw pliers. You know the one with a slot and 2 positions big or tight. They are usable no matter how rusty and are cheap as chips.
I have a locker in the cockpit and I fit these pliars a knife and screw driver under bits of elastic that are screwed into the balsa filling. It is great with one hand on the tiller I can hand any crew person a tool in a flash.
I have seen the multitools here (chinese copy no doubt) for 4 squid but I doubt the pliers part would have any real strength. Being a little boat based near home I take all required tools for any job from home and return them home. Just carry the pliers and a few spare shackles and bolts. olewill

my Gerber snapped (plier tips) and one of it wire cutter blades fell off.
not happy /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Iv'e got a Gerber and a leatherman and must admit i use the Gerber the most and the pouch is more comfortable and discreet.

I have a friend who has an angle grinder as a multi tool, he's famous for it, finding so many varied uses for the anglegrinder, including an attempt at digit amputation earlier this year! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Nothing like a discreet pouch on board to keep the crew happy /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Have a Leatheman and an average-ish Swarmy knife and use the Swarmy more often. The blades are easy to deploy, its cork screw is better than many you can buy (seems to be two pieces of metal twisted togther which gives a flat edge rather than just a twisted round section pointed rod), scissors are sharp and precise (u can get replacement springs)....etc. L/man is quite heavy on your belt all day too.
