we made the decision to antifoul the prop with prop-o-drev and one of my wiley ol' salty seadog mateys suggested putting a couple of coats of hard grease on it too. The proprietary lanolin stuff is flipping expensive, so I wonder if anyone else has any suggestions?

Anhydrous lanolin BP is a component of the propriety stuff but is a lot cheaper on its own.
I got a 500 ml tub about five years ago and am still using it, despite slapping it on galvanised rigging screws etc.
A chemist should be able to order some... in the days when chemists made their own cosmetics it was used as a base.
Its only boiled up grease from sheep's wool.

Don't do it.

I tried this a few years ago and the silt in the "clear" waters of the Caribbean left a gunge on the prop within a few hours of motoring. It took many, many hours of snorkelling to clean the prop.

Complete waste of time. Grease will disappear within minutes from a prop whizzing around at over 1000 rpm - in water! If you are going to try something use the proper lanolin based product and follow the instructions. However it is very difficult to get anything to stick to a prop for any length of time.

So I wonder what these little buggers use....

The last lot of worms I shifted took an angle grinder and flapwheel!

They secrete a glue like substance - obvious really as they survive by sticking themselves to wet slimy rocks so a prop is easy meat for them!

so a little research from them that can, could find out the formula and hey presto!

seems odd that this hasn't been done.

I saw a post recently saying that one of the cheapest ways of getting lanolin in the right form was to buy some teet 'grease' as used

by the milk farmers.
