It used to be at https://mcanet.mcga.gov.uk/ssr/ssr/ and while it was a bit clumsy to use, it mostly worked. Now it redirects to a new UKSR website at UK Ship Register which says at the top "BETA This is a new service – your feedback will help us to improve it." - and is completely broken. My old login did not work, the password recovery doesn't either, so I created a new login, which lets me in, but the vessel search doesn't work at all and finds nothing (and has broken pagination).

Did anyone use this successfully yet? I need to update our registration. I've even tried a Chrome browser ?

No, its shit. You can not renew on it - not an option. Really quite the worst government web site I've found: usually the gov.uk sites are rather good.

The system appears to work like this:

You go on the website and find an email address

You email and get a system generated reply

After waiting some time for a proper response you phone the number on the website to chase the email

You get through to something called Seamen's records or something like that.

They try to put you through to the Small Ship Register, but they are away from their desk or something.

After an iteration or two

Eventually you speak to a very nice helpful person who emails you with a prefilled form for you to sign and return with a cheque

Useful to take people's names as you go along, because that magically gets you connected just after you've been told they are at lunch

My experience is as yet incomplete, as I await the new certificate (my fault in delaying returning the form)

My impression is of a very small office that does primarily other stuff.

Thanks James. Just called them and going through pretty much the same experience. All very friendly, working from home due to social distancing and apparently quite happy to get to talk to someone! But sadly not the right person.

Now waiting for call back on my mobile from the right person, as they couldn't connect me to them due to working from home and having no access to the phone system.

It all could be so easy if they had a working website instead of some unfinished intern's project.

Contact details here if someone needs them: Register a boat

Well, got a response to the bugreport I filed, so here's the official word:

Thank you for your feedback to the UK Ship Register.

This service is currently in beta and your feedback will help us to ensure the service meets the needs of the customer.

Please note this service is currently only accepting New Registrations to the UK Ship Register.

Please follow: UK Ship Register to access the new service.

If you are currently registered with the UK Ship Register and wish to renew or amend your registration, please contact us on UKSR@mcga.gov.uk.

Regards,

UK Ship Register

So the webthing is officially not working for renewals, amendments or cancellations, only for new registrations (supposedly).

Since I never got my call returned and the guy then complained that he kept receiving wrongly routed calls for the SSR team, I guess I'll try emailing next. o_O
