What goes on a Yanmar 1GM10 head gasket?

I've never used any gasket goo when reassembling cylinger heads/head gaskets, but the manual to my 1GM10 says I should use 3 bond 50 gasket sealant. Anyone had experience of this stuff?
Thanks
John

Yes, it looks like a conventional gasket sealant. I've used it for mixing elbows. It's a Yanmar product as far as I know - you can buy it from Yanmar parts dealers.

Having done a few motor car heads I feel I can comment generally on this. The use of gasket compounds is often advised against for many head gaskets. If Yanmar suggest using it I would suggest you find out where exactly it's going. It might be for example round the cooling water galleries only or on some other associated parts. Phone Marine Power in Bursledon, they'll probably know. In any event get some proper advice, do the job exactly as the workshop manual says and use the right sealer (if needed)

It is curious. The manual for my 3JH3 gives quite detailed instructions for replacing the cylinder head but does not mention the use of 3 bond with the gasket. So best check to make sure (French Marine are also helpful).

i've used a smear of grease on the faces of head and block,it was a tip given to me many years ago'the idea is that it fills any small iregualirities and should help seal water jacket/oilways etc i'm not sure how much it helped but it did no harm as far as i could see.but as said before i've never heard of using gasket goo, check with manufacturers if you can and see what they say.

It used to be standard, at least with petrol engines, to use "gasket goo". The most recent one that I did was in 1982 and it's still going strong. Nowadays , I think that the thin gaskets used may have a coating on both sides which melt and flows to do the same job.

This is the right answer. I checked it with the Yanmar dealer and they said the old head gaskets many years ago needed goo but the new ones didn't. However, no one has amended the manuals!
