Hi all,

I am planning on installing a chines copy of a Racor 500 fuel filter this weekend. I can't anywhere find what type of fittings I need to screw into the filter and what size fuel hose I should be using. I have a Volvo MD2020. I can't check as stupidly I took the filter to the boat when I got it about month ago and forgot to check what I needed. I would like to get the fuel lines and connections before I go and fit it this weekend.
If anyone could shed any light on what exactly I need then I would be most grateful.

You will be fine with 6mm or 8mm fuel lines but the Volvo manual should confirm this. As to the Racor fittings, it will depend upon exactly which copy you have bought because even Racor have changed their fittings from time to time.

thanks Richard, I can't seem to see it in the manual for the Volvo that is the annoying thing, I think 8mm sounds about right though.
This is the fuel filter if it helps:

The advert shows two dowty washers so the threads will not be tapered. I would therefore guess that they will be metric, either standard or coarse depending upon the size. If you can go into a fastener shop they will quickly advise you or you could measure the diameter and count the threads in the fitting and look online.

They might well be metric, but I'm not certain they would be as presumably they're mainly sold in the U.S.A. market.

Do please report back when you've found out, as I'm pondering getting one of these copies myself.

Current genuine Racor 500s have 3/4"-16 UNF Female Ports, so that might be worth trying. (I think Racor previously used to be NPT thread.) If that 3/4 UNF is the thread, the only direct hose tail I could find quickly was this, but it's for 3/8" hose (about 9.5mm). Racor Fittings, Hose Tail (3/4" x 16 UNF Male to 3/8" Hose)

(By the way, that fitting is £7.75, but the same supplier can also provide a genuine Racor one for £96.08! )

Various fitting suppliers I found on the internet will make up fittings to order, specifically mentioning UNF threads as an option, but how expensive that would be I don't know. I dare say a general engineering shop would also do so. Another option is a series of fittings to get from the correct thread in the filter port to the hose size you want.

Indeed. Once the OP has identified the fitting size, a quick call or email to Hyphose Hyphose Ltd, The Premier Supplier Of Hose Products and the necessary parts will be on their way. :)

I was reading my engine manual yesterday coincidentally. A 200hp diesel. It needs 5/16” pipe copper for feed and 1/4” return. That’s OD, not ID and is bugger all and you probably won’t want less on a smaller engine or you will have a noodle as a feed pipe.

Thanks all, it didn't come with any fittings for the hose, which is why I was unsure. I have found today it is M14 screw thread size and I have ordered for an 8mm hose size hopefully that will fit the lift pump as well
