I have had to replace the pulpit step/ seat? as the old one was badly weathered and had started to split.

I have made a new one from a piece of Sapele and just need to finish it off over the next few days. The question is with what?

there is no other woodwork close so a close match doesn’t matter. Coachroof grabrails are unfinished (will probably address that) and not looking for concour d ‘ elegance finish.

i‘ve used epifanes on some of the trim around the companionway hatch but that’s pretty sheltered under the spray hood and I’m thinking this step will take more of the brunt of weather / UV etc.

I don’t want to have to be spending loads of time every spring refinishing the step so suggestions for what I can apply that will last reasonably well, need minimal annual sanding and re coating and still look reasonabl.

Why not just leave it bare? Once it has faded to a "weathered" grey colour it will always look the same so maintenance free for at least 15 years,

Varnish the underside and edges and paint the top with non slip or apply a Treadmaster pad for non slip. Or if you have a tine of Woodskin handy use that and do the handrails as well.

Not a brilliant picture but you can just make out the 2 seats at the end of the rail across the pushpit, just like the step on a pulpit. Done in Woodskin and looks like the coamings.
