One of the funniest things I ever saw in boating was a prominent SWMBO type from the WOA explain to the Slovenians everything that was wrong with the GK35 at the 05 Southampton Boat Show. I think it was fair to say that it was not quite the boat that the Centaur owners wanted to trade up to. "Will it come with a bilge keel option" said one with a white beard.

I know the boatshow model sat, apparently dormant, on the Hamble for a bit.

Marketing and awful interiors aside though, oh and an awful helm position, it could have worked. It should have been light and it was certainly well priced.

My Fulmar-owning chum and I must have turned up not long after this 'lecture'.

When we asked to come on board, the sales guy said "No, I'm off to lunch" and locked the boat. He looked as if he was giving up and going home.

Not where I would fancy sitting on a long, short handed night passage.

"Bit like the British motor industry "

There problem wasnt so much price as...... having a car that went around the corner properly (Morris Marina)..... Having cars that didnt drive like dust carts...(All the Rover Saloons) .... Lucas (Prince of Darkness) .... Cars that didnt turn into piles of oxidized mild steel if left out in the rain over the weekend...(Everything they built).. Oil filled solex carbs...(WTF was that all about???)..... and mainly a workforce that didnt understand the basic relationship between profit/productivity and their wages.

Oh and the TR7.

And the Princess.

Yes, like Moody they never discovered the secret of the Scandinavian way of charging appropriate prices. Bit like the British motor industry

Ah, but they did. Trouyble was that the extra money did not go into extra "quality", but supporting inefficient processes - so those with money to spend either bought "more" boat from a mass producer or "less and better" from the Scandinavians.

I worked for Volvo in Gothenberg for a few years. I was fed up with Swedes pointing to the Morris Minor etc and laughing at the poor quality of the British motor industry.

I always turned it around by pointing at Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Morgan, Rover and Jaguar. All quality cars. Have I forgotton one?

Its easy to look at the worse car, boat whatever and whine away. Your competitors just LOVE the Brits negative attitude.
