What does the panel think...

Have two kids (one of each flavour) aged 6 and 8. Happy to be sqeezed into a crawl-in double at present. In the panel's opinion, at what age will they get bolshie and demand separate cabins (the eldest is a girl)? What boats should I plan to look at for a tri-cab layout (assuming that if I'm paying that much money, I'm not sleeping on the bloody sofa). Thinking about stuff like Squaddie 43, Princess 4x0, Rodman 41 etc.

I do believe there is an actual legal age laid down where the two sexes have to have there own rooms, think it's 11, but not being a parent type, not sure, but knowing girls she'll want her own space at about 9!

Hm. Is this a (not too bad) excuse to buy a larger boat? I think it is, cos they haven't complained yet, have they? In fact, I bet they haven't mentioned it!! An thy like all that nice family, getting along wiv each other. So, you need a larger boat immediately. Or at least, something you ought to think about very soon.

Incidentally (seriousishly), I belive that it is the law that they need sepret bedroms at home from age 12.

Interesting point about it being law. What happens if you can't afford a three bedroom house? Do you go to jail? (Thus freeing up a room I guess!!)

Better yet get a 4 cabin boat and make the wife sleep elsewhere. If this is not an option have a 3 cabin make
the wife sleep with the daughter then you and your son
get your own cabins.

Mine open plan after my bedroom. So everyone else sleeps where they please. Dont think the law counts for boats cravans, tents, or brothels!!

No one can force me to come here-----------

Very astute. It is indeed a thinly disguised attempt to justify looking for a bigger boat. It'll take some planning, so not for a year or three, but there you go...

Exactly. SO leaving aside the law (that gets laid down by SWMBO anyway), what boats should I look at? Suggestions please - which boats have tri-cab layouts, and what are the pros and cons?

This is an excellent excuse to get a new boat; I presume you've been surreptitiously stirring it between said kids in order that SWMBO gets the message? Good.
P440 would make an excellent choice as it's a lorra boat for the money and you should get a good one for less than £200k, Squaddie 43 is appreciably smaller and a bit too squashed inside IMHO. Dont know the Rodman but there's one parked next to me and it does'nt look as well finished as the Brit boats and the cockpit's completely devoid of seating
You could also look at aft cabin boats like the Sealine 450/T46 or 410/F43 as these can have 2 separate forward cabins in addition to the aft cabin; this format means the kids can be murdering each other at 6 am and you wont hear it. Alternatively, you could look at boats with a crew cabin aft like the Princess 470 or Fairline 43/45

Done some research - must have been bored - and the bit about having to have separate rooms is pants. However, if you can get the social services to help out with an extra cabin then go for it :-))

Re: Targa 48

Yes indeedy. Three real cabins. Loads of teensy problems if you a really pick git like me but it always went when required, apart from that time i forgot to let go the bow rope...

Smaller than a t48 mean you need a flybridge yot about which i know sod all and am a bit scaredy at ladders in the sea, and i expect the crappy crew would sneak off below, fall of tghe back without me knowing and leave me steering all alone with no cups of tea or having to rummage for my own beer instead of doing all the helming and nav inreturn for beer and tea being supplied.

ahem. Anyway, T48 quite good 2nd hand i bet. Should crack 33 knots with caterpillars, couple more knots with later volvos. Never any probs with our caterpillars. Small spray leak ensured the sodding things went a bit rusty - and the first question should be "how much water gets into the bilges?"

Re: attn GW re tripleace

Um, I wonder if you have perchance had a look around triple ace? I wd. But not quite sure of layout. If there a double up front there no pic of it.... 40 footer with 600hp, means other option is 2x mentally overstressed 300's.

Also wd allow a ton of spare loot for lashing around with race seats, leathery sofas, dual furuno radar and gps screens connected to the dvd player so can watch a nice film whilst droning over the channel, and yet still have radar + plotter + highway on t'other screen . Also no "new boat " aggro when a boat the smae size but more than twice the loot goes a bit wrong. There is the slight pstychological prob of it being a sealine BUT you could remove all traces of the stickers and get some nice whacky purple/yellow decals that say Surf! along the side.

Matt! Have you been drinking again? Natty purple stripes with "surf" on them!?!? /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Re: attn GW re tripleace

I have, actually. But I think we need something with three cabins, cos I want somewhere to lock the kids after lights out, so we can get some peace. The T48's a nice idea, but probably more than I was thinking of (and bigger, too).

Serious question: I read somewhere that there is a size in the UK over which it starts to get awkward getting berths in marinas - something around 45-50 foot, if memory serves. Is this true? 45 foot seems a comfortable size at this stage, and I can't see us going bigger than that on this move.
