What do you wear under waterproofs ?

Having recently acquired a second hand set of Henry LLoyd Azores waterproofs, I was disappointed that I still seem to trap a lot of perspiration.

Does wearing natural fibres underneath make a difference ?

Any tips would be gratefuly accepted.

p.s. Postman's Overtrousers

Did you know their gear is Gortex ?
I bought a pair new for ten quid at a place that
deals with the MOD. Something to do with the
Post Office keep changing names. They are
not high topped but are light, very
waterproof and no sweating ! I am now
considering the jacket but they cost 50 .

Don't wear natural fibres (cotton, wool, jeans, etc) under breathables - they trap moisture. If you really want to stay dry, you need 'wicking' layers, thermals and mid layers. These transfer moisture off the skin very rapidly and allow the breathable fabrics to work effectively.

These wicking fabrics are man made (usually polypropylene I think). Have a look in good walking shops, they have been using these materials for many years, and usually have a far better selection than marine shops/chandlers.

The thermals are not cheap, but if you own fleeces already, these are usually fine.

I use an all in one 'Thinsulate' jump suit as used by scuba divers under their suits.....its very warm, very comfortable, wicks moisture away and if any part gets wet it is reasonably water resistant on the exterior and should it penetrate then it remains warm....cost about 80 quid......

I have an Azores suit and it works fine. As other respondent said do not wear cotton. I always wear thermal vest and long johns which I also sleep in if going through night. Mine are polyviloft and were made for Marks & S. and are 5 or 6 years old as I bought 4 sets cheap at Market. If you go to most local markets there will be a stall selling thermals as lots of people doing real jobs, like manual work, wear them. If you don't fancy a market stall get to a Army & Navy store. No need to pay fancy prices. Fleece tops (don't have to have fancy names on) are excellent. I also wear Regatta lined walking trousers which have a brushed lining inside and a 65% polyester outer. The lining is I think brushed cotton but they do not retain moisture. I wear these trousers all the time when sailing without the waterproofs because if they do get wet the outer does not soak up water like jeans and they do dry very quickly. Hope this is usefull

Try www.the-outdoor.co.uk

You will find that the shop's have much more gear in them than the website.

I suggest giving them a ring first to see what gear they have. I made the trek to the Chelmsford shop.

What I have got so far :-

Used Hernri Lloyd Azores 20 quid top, 20 quid bottom.

Survival suit with RN on it 20 quid.

Postman's trousers 10 quid.

I bid 30 for the Pith Helmet but they turned it down

They also stock handcuffs if you are into that kind of thing.

Regards,
Vic
