Its a cross between Motorboats Monthly and The National Trust magazine, in terms of layout! I liked the old style better! It was distinctive and you knew where you were with it. Now its a bit samey.

Content rather than style

As per my recent thread 'Incestuous YM' I was far more concerned by the content than the style - yet another issue packed full of the sailing exploits of the editorial team namely Gelder, Durham, Cunliffe! What about some fresh experiences rather than repackaging the same old farts!

The trouble with design

is that it's always going to be a matter of personal taste whether you prefer the old to the new. What clever art directors do is make change incremental (and the editor's don't trumpet about it). That way over the course of a year or two a mag can change radically without anybody but the most eagle-eyed design anoraks noticing.

Re: Content rather than style

I have to agree, it did not take long to read this month. If you compare it with Motorboat and Yachting, it is now a very poor relation indeed - we raggies are getting short changed in my view.

To get away from the editorial team

I would have thought part of the reason for these boards being hosted at considerable cost would have given the editorial team an idea of what we the sailors and purchasers of said publications were worried about, needing information about or genuinly scared about (fuel costs, insurance, mooring etc).

But alas it seems the teams do not read the forum, or believe they know better. I have found myself wanting more regularly after reading stories or handling info. I personally don't think in many areas the magazines go deep enough in and are selling us short.

One of the biggest gripes this year by far has been about Jet Skis (please don't let this start another thread), yet PBO and YM have not so far ran any articles on this problem, I realise sister publications in IPC probably promote these things but that is no excuse.

Sailing clubs up and down the country are having their annual regatta's and balls, yet I know more about the Solent clubs than my own area, there is much happening ooop north too.

I would like to see interviews with RNLI, HMC, Insurance, Harbour Masters, Everyday sailors far more than rich kids with months off to cruise whereever, not that this is not interesting, but like most my sailing is paid for by working through the week.

I would like to see hard facts, I would like more about crime, avoiding crime, where is good and cheap, where is a rip off (see Aberystwith).

I want to be able to relate more to the magazine, where multihulls are not considered death traps and not everyone sails Bavs, Bens or jens. There is a large group of people who sail on a budget of time and money, lets hear something about them.

Otherwise I quite like it /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Sailing Today

Agree. Never thought I'd say it but recently ST has felt like a breath of fresh air!

And just so they can't complain that I didn't try, I actually sent a PM to Kim H last week after the response to my 'Incenstuous YM' thread looked as though it struck a chord with some other people and not just me. Rather than just passively relying on the the YM team browsing these posts on the off chance of seeing some useful feedback, I proactively (yuck, horrid work) sent him a PM so he could draw their attention to this viewpoint.

But so far, nothing heard. I'll try once more, then I've done my bit!

Thanks...

...for your comments to far. We value brickbats and bouquets; please keep them coming.

Your views on the contents of YM, particularly with regard to 'incestuous YM', are noted and respected and I won't comment on them here.

Similarly your views on the design are also noted and respected. Design change on a magazine which is successful and generally well received by its readers (comments on this threat not withstanding), should be a matter of evolution not revolution. If an Editor and his/her Art Editor can avoid critisism both for letting the magazine get stale and for making it to brash and trendy, they are probably doing a pretty good job. I was just congratulating Paul yesterday on having achieved it when this threat appeared. Even so, I think he, Holly and the art team have done a pretty good job.

I am interested in comments on the cover being a bit retro. In fact the design is quite modern although it reverts to a 'full bleed' format which we have used in the past. Paul and Holly have cleaned up the cover and allowed the picture to speak for itself. I suspect the retro comments are inspired by the colouring of the photograph and the slightly sepia tints in the sail and on deck (evening sunlight). This, at any rate, was the feed back I gave Paul.

Internally the changes have been as fundamental as a new body text font and headline styles, though the differences are quite small. The intention has been to open up the text, make it lighter yet easier to read. Personally I think this has been achieved very successfully. I think Paul has also tried to make the design a little less 'in your face' to reflect a more considered editorial style. Paul may disagree entirely; I was not involved in the redesign.

Finally, there was an implication that the editorial staff does not read or take notice of posts on Scuttlebutt. One of my tasks (largely self-appointed) is to do just that. Paul, unfortunately does not have the time to read through all the posts on a daily basis so I give him a periodic review of anything of interest and alert him instantly to anything important. If you have any comments, criticisms or, God forbid, compliments to make on YM, a PM to Kim is quite in order. However, copying or directing it to me, or even emailing Paul direct (he may not have time to reply individually), might speed up the information flow and make it more personal.

But do keep the comments and feed back coming.

Re: Thanks...

I think the revamp works very well, but the over-use of some writers in clumps is becoming a bit of a problem. I'm beginning to wonder if Powder Monkey is due to go on the register of historic ships. But hey! At least Paul doesn't run an article every month with a title like 'harness the power of propwash'. Yawn.
