Motor boats are not exactly a strenuous hobby and aware that I am not really in the peak of fitness I just bought a canoe to try and recapture some of the fitness I had during my misspent youth...I couldnt face a gym ... so what do you do or is the effort really not worth it?

I cycle with a group 2-3 times per week, av 20 - 30 miles at ~18mph with the occasional 100 miles at 15 - 16mph. That really gets my old heart and lungs going, but I don't lose any weight!!

I keep fit one day a year, usually the day before we go skiing but this year, in consideration of my advancing years and waistline, I decided on a rigorous regime of 6 weeks of exercise biking and ski related exercises combined with a healthier diet
Did it make a difference? Did it f**k. As normal I was still completely knackered at the end of day one and by the end of the week, I could have happily died
I think the ideal fitness regime would involve climbing 10 flights of stairs to get to your bedroom and loads of rumpty tumpty when you get there

I train 6 times a week both weights and running. Against popular belief you dont need to spend hours in the gym 20 mins three times a week is more than enough.

running is superb exercise but can be stressfull on joints but your body needs impact exercises to maintain strong bones. swimming is ok but lacks 'body weight bearing' component as does cycling although both are excellent cardio vascular exercises.

Rowing machines are great cardio and help to strengthen the whole body- a really good exercise, but again no impact element.

to keep relatively fit all you need to do is maintain c.65-70% or so of maximum heart rate for 20 mins three times a week, this will also burn fat. if you want to burn fat quicker and accelerate cardio work then HIIT (high intensity interval training) is excellent which is going at as near as 100% of heart rate for as long as possible then a break and then again - 3 times a week for 15 mins each session, this can be on a bike, running, swimming etc.

weight work is as important as cardio work for all round health

I think the important thing is to find something you enjoy and be realsitic as to being able to keep it up, no point going mad for a short while then giving it up i see that so often.

hope doesnt come across trying to teach my grandma to suck eggs wasnt meant to, just thought i post what little i know on the subject

Used to go to Gym 3-4 times a week but got bored with it. Used to Fence 2-3 times a week but suffered an injury to neck/shoulders so had to retire early. I now Cycle (off road if poss) as often as I can, run a couple of miles 3 times a week when I have the time. Funnily enough I too am considering a canoe again or maybe just an inflatable to row around.

I agree kevin. Twice a week i do 15 rounds of boxing for a full-impact facial workout, and then jump off a cliff for an all-over high-impact regime.

Diet is important too, i think. Actually, i am also doing several diets at the same time, so i sometimes also a full "Atkins" cooked breakfast, but like many I am not too sure of Atkins long-term. So, to be on the safe side, every day at about 11 am I switch to a diet that promotes having lunch, and then in the afternoon I switch again to catch up with another diet or two in the evening.

atleast your trying to better yourself which is the main thing!

that Atkins diet is great i love fry ups and now they are healthy!-long live Dr Atkins, or did he die recently of a heart attack!

Im presuming then that you feel that 15 rounds of you being smacked in the face would improve things? - smiley face-

Egyptian PT

You may still be here, but the fact that you've typed "thsi", instead of "this", indicates to me that your eyesight and hand/eye co-ordination are shot.

This is clear evidence of an over-familiarity with Mrs Palm and her five lovely daughters........... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Nah..

An old adage from a company sage in my youth when we had all been running as a group every morning ' the corporate way' at 0600, and he avoided doing anything under the pretext he was doing "egyptian PT'. The septics running the course fell for it all week ( he had spent many years overseas).

On the last morning , curiosity got to them and they had to ask what 'Egyptian PT ' entailed..

He proudly informed the assembled audience:-

' I've been doing this exercise every morning since my teenage years, I wake up every morning , open my eyes, blink hard 3 times , thank C****t I am still alive despite the previous evening's excesses and get another 5 minutes kip.'

3 very deflated US motivational psychologists !!!

Stayed with me ever since.
