What do surveyors do - and can you recommend one?

Can anyone recommend a marine surveyor in the Poole area?

I have found a boat which looks to be both good value and in good condition -- but being a 1990 boat, I'm keen to have it looked at professionally.

Also - what exactly would a surveyor DO -- just inspect the boat (the engines too?) and would they take it out on a sea trial?

As this will be my first boat, I'm keen not to be taken for a mug and prejudice what could otherwise be a long and happy relationship with boats -- so I'd be grateful for good advice (once again!) from the more experienced forum members.

Mr Dunlop did Resolution when we bought her in 91 & there were no surprises, then or since.

You must set the perameters of the survey. For example, you can have just a "hull" survey, or a "hull & major machinery" survey or a "full" survey.

Which ever one you choose, check first that they have the right equipment i.e. do they use fibre optic scopes to see where the eye cannot (under fuel tanks etc) and are they experienced in your field of boating - sail - single engine - twin engine etc etc. Next check that they hold the required certification for yacht and boat surveying and finally check that they hold professional indemnity (PI) insurance to back up their surveys. Then after all this get two or three personal recommendations and preferably not one from the seller.

Hope all goes well - keep us posted.

Cheers
Dave.

Thanks -- without the pointers, I'd have been quite likely to ask for the wrong thing!

Looking at other posts here, I'll make sure my offer is 'subject to survey' too.

With luck, I'll be able to start contributing to this forum on the basis of a little experience (if not actual knowledge!).

Re: What do surveyors do - and can you recommend o

This link http://www.namsurveyors.org/articles/Wallstrom-bob01.htm belongs to an organization in the US--National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS), who only accepts the most highly qualified for membership and has very strict rules. Though I don't believe NAMS has any members in the UK, the information about what a GOOD surveyor should do and what to look for in finding one in the article "why hire a professional surveyor" on this site applies worldwide. I think you'll find it worthwhile reading.

Had survey done prior to purchase on my boat, £250 well worth the money IMHO, professional service and comprehensive report, Booklet rather than a loose leaf doc.
Gave me a load of bargaining power with vendor and money saved on agreed sale price, more than covered cost of survey.
Unfortunately I don't know of anyone in your area

Dave.

Re experience

Two truisms apply to experience:

Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgement.

You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
