What do people think of memory maps

They are licenced scans of Admiralty charts linked to Memory Maps own navigation software and excellent value.

The package from http://www.visitmyharbour.com/ is developing a good reputation at the moment but I havent tried it.....yet.

Others will come along with much more information in due course

Hi-
I use Memory Map, the UK coastal set. c.£36.00 last year.

It works ok, I found it a little under-specced after Tsunamis but I needed something in-date.

I have since found more features, like speed profiles of all your routes.

It is stable and usable. One reason I wanted it is that I have a Windows Mobile phone and it is easy to send maps to that as a backup's backup. (and to bore non boaty friends in the pub) I also use it on the phone for walking with OS 25000 maps.

I have migrated the licence (PC and mobile) twice without problems and the old devices kept working too.

Much much better than Imray, colours are 'right' no hanging up, and full UK coverage.

Ill go for it then,
i like the fact that i can plot somthing on the pc then transfer it to the ipad AND print the propper chart to use,

I have both 2 year old Memory Map UK charts and the latest updated charts from VisitMy Harbour. Both can interface to GPS to work as a plotter.
They are the same ARCS charts but the clincher for me was that the VisitMy Harbour charts work with SeaClear and I can therefore display live AIS and data on the chart. I much prefer SeaClear to Memory Map software.

With Memory Map you are allowed 2 installs, VisitMyHarbour uses the DVD as a key on starting the program, then its not needed so you can run it on as many PC's as you like albeit one at a time.
I bought the optional dongle so I can easily move the program around my various notebooks, some of which dont have DVD drives.
VisitMyHarbour supply a print routine for printing the Charts, the windows print routine is displayed under the terms of their ARCS license, I dont know what the position is with Memory Map - that would be worth checking if you go that route.
Finally VisitMy Harbour support is excellent, they really do answer questions very quickly.

I like to have the admiralty charts as a backup for plotters.

We have the whole of the UK from memory map. Cost so little I cannot remember how much it was. Perhaps £30 or some. Awesome value.

I have Memory Map on a notebook and a PC/desktop, and I could also install it on a mobo-phone should I wish. It cost £30 at SIBS and has been faultless.

I have been using the visit my harbour on a laptop as a plotter which is connected to the boats GPS and an AIS. This I have found to work well but I bought a poor quality android pad to us as a slave monitor that could be viewed through a Perspex screen in the cockpit but unfortunately can’t get the software that does this to work down to the pad I think. Rather than spend more time on this I down loaded memory maps for less than £30 onto my HTC phone. This now allows me to have the charts I require as a plotter in the cockpit it uses the phones GPS but obviously does not have AIS facility. I realise this is not as good as a proper marine plotter but it cost very little and means that you have 2 separate GPS sources. I have not really used the drop down menu yet on the memory maps but for the money I think both lots of software offer good value.

Memory Map

When this first came out it was the best thing available but it is now expensive for what it does. For printing - what about screen print? Memory map still requires scaling if you want to use it as a paper chart.

The customer service is appalling and they know how to charge once you are hooked, but it does what it says on the tin.

Memory Map

Great charts, but a lousy interface compared to SeaClear or OpenCPN.

It is possible to print to file the chart images and geo-reference them for SeaClear or OpenCPN, though VisitMyHarbour have made that pointless as far as SeaClear is concerned.

Memory Map charts can be printed (whole chart or a selected region) as either 'fit to paper' or at one of several preset scales. Resolution is adjustable, but seems to be 450 dpi native.

I am in the process of printing a folio for passage west and have just printed one at far too small a scale. It could still be read with a magnifying glass!

Memory Map and AIS

You can have AIS with Memory Map, you need to download the American version from their site, then the AIS add on is free.
I like MM, it doesn't handle waypoints and route making and editing very well. I use another program for that.
As for the MM app, well that needs a lot more work. It crashes frequently and its accuracy is suspect. I have been on land when clearly on the water. Could be the phone GPS accurracy but I have checked that. I just have it as back up, at this stage its a poor substitute compared to the PC version.
