What dinghy had sails with a mortar board insignia?

I have a lovely old dinghy which I thought was a graduate and possibly still is.

But the sail is a very early number with a mortar board on it and not a "G", which the graduate owners club know nothing about.

So does anyone know what this sail is?

Digging deep in the memory banks here (ie over a week ago) but I seem to remember someone somewhere talking about having a very early Graduate (with the mortar board insignia) prior to the design being taken over & becoming popular.

But I haven't a clue who it was or where I saw it. Surprised the Grad owners club don't know about it tho'. Could be that senility strikes again.

[/ QUOTE ] I remebered it too but it was the same person talking about the same dinghy. (Last Friday)

Possibly.

But I didn't mention anything about the boat being a prior Graduate design or prototype or such like.

I can't find anyone else having said that; but it is an intriguing idea - the Grad owners can't help. They have asked for photos.
They said to try to contact the vintage dinghy club, but there web site wasn't working last time I tried.

So, the mystery remains

I have a very old reference book for racing yachts and dinghies. The Graduate sail mark is shown as a black D shape with a large G next to it. The text does not mention whether this sail mark was different for earlier versions or not.

This web site shows a mortar board shape for a Freshman which I suspect is an American boat.

Freshman is absolutely right. I sailed one (the only one I've ever seen) once in the late 60's in Penzance. Not a US design, one of the several UK plywood jobbies in the huge boom in the late 50's

Excellent.
Thanks a lot.
I am no longer amazed at the number of intelligent people frequenting this website, but I am always grateful.
I am now googling for images of a Freshman and if it looks similar to the Graduate, mystery solved.
Or perhaps I have Freshman sails on a Grad.
But it is a great lead.
thanks
