Two fishes or mammals swimming near the surface with their backs arching out of the water like dolphins do. Black or very dark in colour with prominent dorsal fins. They seemed much smaller than dolphins I'd seen in the Aegean a few years ago

Yes, we've also seen harbour porpoises several times this year, most recently last Sunday just south of Mersea Stone Point (popped up no more than 25 yards away).

Also nice to see the West Mersea young seal is back. Hasn't he/she grown? Must be all the fisheads the crabbers throw to him/her (if the gulls don't get them first)

Harbour porpoises are reasonably common around here. They broach very quickly, and have an almost right angle triangle dorsal fin, I saw a pair out around Wallet No6 a few weeks ago. Very different, and much more timid than the "dolphins" you get elsewhere. Had the privilege of loads of them in and coming back from Ireland, including a good display, phosphoresence and all at night near the Scillies on the way back
