Right I have been boating for years, mainly inland till dropping south last year, tail end of last year we bought a proper boat to fix up and now feel it is getting to a state where we can use it properly and start becoming more adventurous. Before we get too keen I feel some propper training is needed.

My boating will for the moment be restricted to the south coast in the solent area (moored on the Itchen) till I get my confidence built up so what course/courses would you recommend?? We both have decent boat handeling skills and lots of common sense (some would argue). Your opinions and recomendations please.

Why not contact the RYAand ask for their advice. I read somewhere recently of a specific RYA powerboat course which would probably do the trick.

RYA Dayskipper if you've got time. Or hire a Powerboat School instructor for regular sessions on your own boat.
If you are happy with your boat handling then really it's only Nav; Weather & Collision Regs. you need from the Dayskipper Theory part. Get one of the nav. instruction books and the aforesaid instructor could check you on these as you go along.
If you are a total novice re. mechanicals then an RYA Diesel Maint. course would be useful - provided you've not got a petrol powered boat./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Good Luck.

Sounds like you've probably got the handling off by now, depending on wether any of the inland cruising was tidal of course, i.e. are you used to currentsand excess wind?

As already said I would think the Day Skipper Practical (complete with ICC) would be most beneficial. CGN

thanks for that, as said I am reasonably compitent with the boat now, we are quite good with the oily bits (one of us is a time served diesel mechanic). My inland experience has been mainly on the Calley Canal (Loch Ness, Oich, Lochy etc) and Loch Lomond. Apart from that I crewed for a raggie friend for years on the west coast both cruising and racing so got to learn all about what the weather and tide can do to you!!

Where are you doing yours then Wiggo? I think I'll end up doing the online one that tcm has recommended ('cos I found the day skipper theory at b&w college very slow going).

Correspondence course, Rick. Can't remember the name, but I found it in the back of MBY. You're welcome to take a look at the material if you want...

Theres a trainer regularly over at Northney, RYA approved. Have his card somewhere. Its a good idea to get some training where you actually use the boat.
You can probably jump to powerboat1+2 after a day with him , I'd guess.
After that, some theory. Often the courses are over the winter months, so you may want to wait a bit! I m just finishing YM next week. If you ve some boating experience, know a bit about bouyage, lights, a bit of chartwork, think you can miss DS and go straight to YM. For me, its about safety. Any idiot can set off, its arriving that counts! From the course, I m now much more aware, better able to gauge what to expect when I set out. Guess thats what I wanted to get out of the course... I can recommend some books that will take you at least half way through the course anyway, so when you do take one, you re almost there !
I m at northney, so hope to see you out on the water soon..!

yeah - that'd be handy, thanks. Maybe you fancy a beer sometime next week? They do a wicked belgian cherry beer at the Bullfinch..

Was trying to organise a local meet for next week anyway... Suggested the Wheelwrights, but happy to move venue. Derek (djefabs) is another Wokingham lad, btw. If you want to see the stuff, give me a buzz and pop over.
