what clock & barometer?

I'm looking for a new (brass) clock & barometer - decent ones that don't tarnish

I've come across Weems & Plath - they look pretty decent - does anyone know of them or can recommend some for me (my birthday presents so money no object.....) - I guess anything up to £120 apiece or so

Not what you want at al but I got a barometer from lidl a few weeks ago handheld keeps a record and displays last 6 hours plus 12 hours for 10.99 works really well dare say they will get em in again

The reason that the traditional brass clock/baro sets dont corrode is that they are lacquered. Eventually...2 or 3 years the skin breaks and they corrode.

Only solution is to buy a chrome set which take about 25 years to breakdown.

The movements in all of the clocks I've looked at recently all have the same cheap movements (Quartz). Which have the advantage that they are cheap (£3~4) to replace and are accurate.

Same detail on the baro mechanism.

For the best cases, buy by weight and appearance.

AFAIK and IMO, Weems and Plath at the bottom end of their range are buying in the same stuff that everybody else is and trading on their name.

I know you want new especially as its a b-day pressy, but if any old clock etc gets tarnished its quite easy to buff them up and relaquer them. I use car laquer, its good on a motor doing whatever miles an hour and all the dust debris etc so it lasts very well and can save a few quid in the bargain. Happy b-day by the way.

Agree that you will struggle to keep lacquered brass corrossion free for long. Stainless steel or black composite material (W&P do some of these) is the way to go if you want maintenance free.

Ref. Robbieg post: I have FCC brass clock and barometer. About 17 years old and still in very good condition. Slight tarnish underside of clock. Had to have barometer repaired about 3 years ago and received first class service from FCC.

dare I say it, ladies hair laquer works well - my clock and baro had about 4 coats about 3 years ago and still look smart.

Like an earlier poster, I bought a stainless steel barometer, thermometer, hygrometer set from Lidls for £7.99. All units seem to work fine and not a sign of corrossion. For a chronometer, I bought a 9in black plastic wall clock from a home discount shop for £1.99. Again, it can't rust, looks quite good and seems to keep just about perfect time.

Mine came from Kelvin Hughes at a London Boat Show about 25 years ago. Cheapest in their range, brass, no signs of corrosion yet!
