Well my vehicle is insured against breakdown repair costs by the AA. And they still send out the settlement fee (up to £500 worth of parts/labour) by cheque.

Really annoying.

However HSBC recently say I can pay in by smart phone. But I cant as AA send out cheque as printed part of letter and HSBC App needs photo of back of cheque - which it wont accept because its blank.

So HSBC have heard of the 21st century but dont know where it is.

Happily the latest cheque was only £20 as compensation for an AA cockup so paying in not urgent enough to break isolation

Most cheques are blank on the back. I have got the app to work OK by writing "BACK" an the back of the cheque.

Ho was your last cheque written 10 years ago if your SSR was last renewed 5 years ago? Maybe there is a way of doing it online, and that's what you did in 2015.
When you apply initially for SSR it allows online payment. This facility does not appear to be there for renewal - the renewal letter specifically states a cheque should be sent payable to MCA

UPDATE:

I emailed the MCA to ask why I couldn't pay for my renewal on line and have just received this response. Why they couldn't include this information in the renewal letter is beyond me. Still, all good now :)

Thank you for your email, I have provided an online payment link below where you can pay the fee through the government website.

You can also send us your renewal form via email by responding to this email with a scanned copy of your application form attached.

My only experience with the MCA was not a happy one, as this letter shows:

“To the Chief Executive MCA
10 July 2007
Dear Mr xx
Complaint concerning difficulties renewing registration. Yacht "xxx". Official nr: xxx
I am writing to complain about a problem I am experiencing with your Cardiff office and to ask that you personally intervene to resolve this and to ensure I receive a new Registration Certificate for my boat, before the old one expires on August 5th.
I received a Renewal of Registration Notice from MCA on June 6th [although the notice was dated May 16th]. I telephoned your Cardiff Office that day and spoke with someone called xxx. I pointed out that the engine shown on my existing Certificate had been replaced by a previous owner in 1982 and two subsequent owners had failed to register the change of engine with you. I wished to put this right and ensure that the particulars on the Certificate were correct. She told me I would have to pay an additional fee of £37 and send a copy of the invoice for the engine currently fitted, even though it was 25 years ago. I assured her I would do this.
Fortunately I happen to have the invoice among the yacht's papers and, as requested by xxx, sent a copy of it with the fee on June 6th. I enclose a copy of my covering letter of that date.
That was more than a month ago and, not having received either a new Certificate or a reply, I telephoned this morning to find out what the difficulty was. The MCA staff member I spoke to today told me that there was a “massive backlog” in dealing with renewals and that they were "snowed under". She also told me that a copy of the engine invoice would not now do and that I must now write again enclosing the original!
I complained about this but she was adamant, even though I pointed out that it was remarkable that I was able to produce a 25 year old document at all. I also reminded her that the fact the registered particulars of the engine had not been updated was the fault of previous owners, and that I was simply trying to be the "good guy" and put the paperwork right [at my expense]! She countered by saying it was "procedure".
I then asked how much longer I would have to wait before receiving my new Certificate and was told five weeks. I pointed out that this would result in my not receiving the new Certificate before the expiry of the old and that this might cause me difficulties with foreign authorities if I was unable to produce a current Certificate. She again told me it was "procedure"
Sadly my protests fell upon "deaf ears" and I decided to bring the matter to your personal attention.
What I would now like is for you to instruct your Cardiff office to accept the invoice copy as valid proof of the engine change and also to issue my new, amended, certificate before the old one expires on August 5th.
Finally, might I draw your attention to the fact that, despite the supposed "massive backlog" in dealing with applications, your Cardiff office did not waste a minute when it came to cashing my cheque! I might also add that nit-picking over a 25-year old piece of paper associated with a 40-year old vessel of low value is not likely to help clear the MCA's backlog, nor will it help maintain the good relations that ought to exist between the MCA and owners of British registered vessels.
Yours sincerely etc.”

Two days later I received an apology and my certificate
