what book?

Can anybody identify this book for me? It has stories about a South Seas schooner captain. In one of the stories he finds a stowaway, who is a drunk rich-man's son and rehabilitates him by making him clean and paint the anchor chain. I read this as a boy and kept looking for it for years with no success.

Sounds a bit like Kipling's Captain Courageous, but that was set in the North Atlantic. It seems to have undertones of Conrad's Secret Sharer as well. Could you have mixed up some of the detail?

I have just checked the Secret Sharer, it is a short story included in the " 'Twixt Land and Sea " collection. I am pretty sure it is not your story, but worth looking at perhaps.
