Hi all, I am looking for info on my boat for payload limitations /outboard weights etc but got no info whatsoever from the seller. If any one could help me with approx year, maker, model etc it would be fantastic.
Thanks in advance.

PS it is 17ft long with full lenght cuddy cabin for two. It had a spray screen and roof thingy fitted but I removed it if thats any help. I had it out and scrapped the hull back then applied two coats antifoulf primer then two coats antifoulf finish. She came up quite nice and is now back afloat. regards Alan in Arbroath.

Its some kind of Dory. Maybe CJR or A Wilson Flyer for example? Their all fairly similar with their cathedral hulls.

50-60hp outboards used to make them go quite well.

What is currently on the back under the bin bag?

Does this do the business?

Hi Donald, now theres a question. Under the bin liner to keep the outboard clean whilst painting the hull lies a 90 HP 4 stroke Mariner. Up to that point when the photo was taken, the boat had not been back in the water since the new mariner ws fitted. Once in the water a few folk mentioned that she was lying a bit low in the water. This has prompted me to get a proper ID on the boat and track down some payload data. Its big for sure but the question boils down to is it too big weight wise. It goes like the wind no doubt but I bought it for price, reliability, warranty only 150 hours from new, FSH and fitting by a proper boat firm. I bought gauges, new steering wheel linkage etc.
She lies lower its true but I am trying to get some numbers rather than relying on anecdotal info.

I have a sea safety guy who will sea test the boat on a calm day and this post was an attempt to get him some real data to work with.

Thanks again
Alan

After a bit more looking, im pretty certain it is a Wilson Flyer hull. Newer ones HERE are rated to 60hp.

I would therefore say that 90hp is probably far too much on such a small boat. You would be better off around 50hp - 60hp. A 90hp fourstroke is worth quite a few quid though, so you might be able to part exhange with one of the bigger outboard dealers for something more suitable.

I would try going into the shetland owners assocciation, as I used to be a member and they had lots of pics of non shetland boats for identity purposes, the answers were always fortcomming.
It does look very like a smaller Microplus though. as for weight, just take it to a weigh bridge, boat and trailer on bridge first, then back with trailer on its own subtract trailer weight which leaves you with exact boat weight, usually scrap metal merchants will let you weigh it.
And a 90hp is definatly tooooooo big for her, it would have been too big and heavy for my previous shetland blackhawk which would have weighed a lot more than yours, 75hp was the limit for yhe shetland.

Yep you right, they are all pretty similar.
Started boating with that type (Virgo) built in Liverpool about 1978.
IMHO that's to mutch motor.
Stuck a new 65hp Suz 3 cyl on mine ,perfect.
It was 16/5 ft. Wify and 3 little ones at the time+ ale, butties and fishing tackle etc.
Flipping thing flew! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Bought her in 1985, used to go all round the Menai Straits area and bits of Anglesey.
Check there ain't any water in the hull.
Some of these dory's had a foam filled hull and could get saturated. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Taint a Microplus or any of the Shetland varieties.
Definately don't need a 90 hp! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The mobo forum might be a betterplace to ask Don't double post though as that is frowned upon/against the rules. Post a link to the question on here.
