A simple question but I suspect the answer won't be so easy. I'm looking for a new barometer......I accidently carried out some detruction testing on my old one, but at least the needle stuck on "Fair".

How do you tell if a barometer is any good. Some very expensive ones with beautiful cases look as if they have the same movement as some really cheap ones. Are the electric one's any good? Can anyone recomend a good one?

I want a reasonable quality one but don't care what it looks like.

Regards

I've got one of the 6-line electronic barometers, and once set up with the altitude (of your home, or zero metres for the boat) it is quite accurate. The barometric pressure is within one hPa of that given by Culdrose NAS via www.weather.co.uk/weather/local

The forecast window is about 60 - 70% accurate. Right now it is showing rain (a forecast) - which was this evenings TV forecast for tomorrow.

Philip

I had the same experience a couple of years ago. The professionals, who the better units were made for, have largely switched over to electronic and the leisure market mechanisms are made by various outfits in Taiwan and they are broadly the same. I did find some outfit in Germany, but they were ludicrously expensive. (I can look it up if you like) So it seems that if you want accuracy buy electronic. We went with a Sowester unit in the end.....

Yes the £99 ones you have seen - only they can be bought for a bit less at Argos.

Details as copied:

Oregon Scientific Electronic Weather Station. Cat.No. 256/8588 Price £89.00

Easy to use, 7 section LCD weather station.
Includes a barometer which predicts your local weather for the next 12 to 24 hours.
Humidity reading with comfort zone check.
Weatherproof 'wireless' temperature sensor to locate inside or out.
Displays moonphase, tide level and a weather history graph.
Also includes bright hi-glo backlight and alarm clock with date display.
Batteries supplied.

This is better than the one I have, as it has the outside temp sensor.

regards,
Philip

Try a "Casio Pro Trek" wrist watch. Cost less than £50 easy to use digital readout and displays the last 24hrs in a graph so its easy to see the trend... I check it with the coastal reports on the 00:48 forecast and its never far away.
