Further to a recent thread about Chitchester, can some one please advice...

What are they?

Which Anti-fouling works on them?

Boat Antifouled in January 1 coat blue cheapish...

Scrubbed once just 12 weeks ago.... Boat kept in a river with not inconsiderable amounts of fresh water flow (Brackish)...

5 Weeks ago she still had a fair turn of speed, today she could do 3 knots instead of 6 under power... See photos below...

3 Local chandlers shown the photos asked for recommendations:
2 x International Mircon extra (2 x£90?)
1 x Hemal Tiger Extra. (2 x £60)

One also suggested buying the darkest paint possible.

When asked about Jotron Sea Queen 1 x £94.99:
2 x said oh no not that..
1 x said he had heard some use it with out bad effect...

Is this any good?

Lifting out I was thinking sealift (It will be a slow passage there :o). Unless someone can recommend cheaper in the Solent area 35', 1.9m draft...

Over to the forum.

I tried Micron Extra 2 years ago in Chi Harbour and wasn't impressed after only 6 months when she was lifted out for a survey. The Tiger stuff is meant to be good and apparently used by the RNLI etc. I am hoping to get some commercial stuff from the docks IF it is OK to put on, I need to check what it is first

I have 3 litres of Crusier Uno just bought if anyone wants it for £60, collection only Reigate/Chichester (now decided to keep mine in for 2 seasons so need something that will last longer)

At the end of the day, there's very little difference between different brands of antifoul. The more expensive ones have better biocide additives. The secret is to put enough of the stuff on in the first place! A single thin coat is a waste of time and money. Apply it generously, and it works. I use Micron, brush applied, several thick coats, and it lasts 2 years of constant immersion.

My boat's just been lifted after 12 months in Northney marina and 6 months in Chichester Marina since being antifouled with 2 coats of Seajet Shogun 033 (plus a bit more on the waterline and leading edge of the keel). There was very little fouling of the hull. Anything metal had a very bad case of tubeworm though. A lot of your loss of speed under power might be because of this fouling your prop.

Anyway, I've been very pleased with the Shogun and have just ordered another 5 litres from Marinestore. They've got a good offer on it at the moment - £71.99 for 2.5 litres with an additional 10% off for spends of up to £150 - 12.5% for spends over £150.

BTW, I use my boat regularly all year and I think that helps keep the fouling down.

The RNLI use Micron Extra.

Sorry Onesea, can't really throw any light on this myself. However, I think perhaps consulting International Marine Paints directly might shed some technical assistance, if you PM me, I can give you their technical helpline number and they'll likely be able to give you an email to send the pics to, have always found them extremely helpful in answering tricky questions...

I think a lot of problems with antifoul are related to boats being moored in constantly moving water. The biocides leach out much more quickly compared to a boat sitting in still water in the marina. A boat in a marina is also sharing its biocides with its neighbours to some extent.
Also boats on swinging moorings get more sunlight than those on pontoons.

The only answers are to put a lot of paint on, or scrub frequently. Even copper coating needs frequent burnishing for a good racing finish.

My boat is right by the secondary entrance to Emsworth Marina so gets a good flow past it as the tide goes in and out. I use Tiger Extra and roll on two thickish coats and the only thing on my hull is a thin layer of slime. I do remove a fair bit of the old antifoul each year by using those pan scourers with metal interwoven in the pad. It stops me getting too thick a build up of old antifoul so i can be lavish each year even if it is b****y hard work.

I also have a long webbing strap with some scrubbing pads sewn on so SWMBO and I can slowly walk from one end to the other pulling the strap back and forth so we can scrub the bottom occassionally. It does help having a lift keel and nothing sticking out to snag on as you do it though.

If you are on drying mooring and sit in mud then nothing will probably help as the mud seems to interact with the antifoul and stops it working. Mine used to go black where it was in contact with mud and barnacles then loved it. Tried several different ones with no effect.

Im afraid most Af are not very good and doing what they are supposed to do. Now all the nasties have been taken out one is left with a poor substitute.

There is ways to get an AF that actually works but your boat would have to be over 30m and you would have to be a commercial users.

If only there were boat yards that would sell you some. oops!!!!!

Finally got the boat lifted today...

Well that's 14 weeks growth but I think most of it was between 6 & 12 weeks... Yes where there was tube worm it was that deep...

Have gone for Hempal Tiger Extra, basically on price basis I could by 3 for the price of 2 International Cruiser Uno...

It was a slow passage to the lift :o, over taken by boats that I REALLY should not get passed :(

Should be better tomorrow though :D:D

Maybe its not an option for you but coppercoat seems to be 100% effective on crustaceans if not on weed. Or at least thats been my experience and that of others I've talked to.

No doubt someone will be along soon to contradict me.:D

Like neilf39 says, Blakes Tiger (Hempel now?) works well in Chichester, up the Emsworth end anyway. At least thats what we used before we saw the light and used Coppercoat, Ah antifouling, memories!:(

I have just called the Coppercoat people and unfortunately because I have just used Primocon there is no point putting Coppercoat on as the Primocon will just deteriorate eventually. I could have just put the Coppercoat straight over the Gelshield - RATS!

Think he said Primocon was a single pack whereas the Coppercoat is a twin pack epoxy - the Primocon needs to expand/contract/get wet etc otherwise it will just peel off...

Coppercoat isn't that expensive either folks for those that are interested - if you do it yourself of course, not exactly hard to do

So back to Cruiser Uno - 3 litres can be got for £47 I think I paid a lot more than that! Wish I had not taken the sellers advice and gone for Hempel Tiger Xtra 2.5 Litres £89.36 instead and might return and do a swap!

Most antifouls sold in chandlery's are basic one season jobs, if you want a quality antifoul that actually works buy Jotun, seaqueen will last 3 years without lifting out and will only need a quick jetwash to clear slime as nothing else will stick.

+1

Speak to the guys at http://www.smlmarinepaints.co.uk/ they are very helpful and will recommend the correct stuff for your conditions. A 5Litre tin of Seaqueen is £86 plus VAT.
