What are the South Coast don\'t miss harbours?

Planning to go from Plymouth to London in September (I hope it will be less busy than August, maybe less rain too ;-). Would like to know where we shouldn't miss. Will it be possible to do much anchoring or will it just be a marina trawl?

Chichester Harbour will be nice, a couple of anchorages and various other spots.

DEpends how far you want to go on each leg. Salcombe is probably the first sensible stop, though still not very far. Plymouth to the River Dart is a nice trip and you can either stay in Dartmouth on the visitor pontoons, or head up river a bit towards Dittisham and Galmpton. Nice visitors buoys opposite Greenway Quay and the pub does good food ( The Ferryboat Inn). Alternatively, continue around Galmpton bend and anchor in the channel on the far side opposite the boat house- it's one of my favourite places to wake up and is beautiful early morning. You can also anchor in Bow creek which is a bit higher up. This drys to mud.

The Dart is also a good point to start towards Portland Bill from what I've heard.

.Torbay is really just marinas, but OK. Continue along the coat to the River Ex- this is also a beautiful river. There are visitors moorings but they are a fair way from the town of Exmouth. Entry and exit to the Ex is more crucial on timings and tides and fairly fast tidal streams. It's not as sinister as the books make out- just needs common sense.

I'm sure someone else can continue east from here as that takes ou to Lyme Bay and that's the edge of the knwon world to the east for me.

Thanks. Hoping to do shortish trips say 30 miles.

yealm, salcombe, dart, poole. IMHO that's about it between plymouth and the needles.

other possibilities include teign, lyme regis, lulworth

Dartmouth, Rye (magical if you're shallow draft and can take the mud) and Chatham are the places I'd always want to call in on between Devon and London. I like going in and out of Dover too - but I could never explain why. Brighton for a great night out - but absolutely not for the marina atmosphere.

Chatham to St Katherine's Dock is an awesome sail for passing landmarks, especially if you are happy to take your time gybing/tacking up the river up the river, allowing for the bits where you have to have the motor on.

Re: What are the South Coast don\'t miss harbours?

does depend on yor taste. i think Brighton is like a theme park, but it is a useful stopover. Sovereign Harbour ( Eastbourne) is convenient for popping in to after Beachy Head but it's next to a soulless shopping mall.
Rye is a different kettle of fish - I took my mother there today for a run out in the car + cream tea. You will dry out at Rye harbour at the bottom end. You can get up to the Town quay and nestle in mud.
Round Dungeness to Dover which has a bit of character and the best chandlers.
Are you going up the Swale? You could pick up a mooring off Faversham creek or anchor off Harty Ferry - a nice Dutch couple told me that they woke up once and found a seal asleep on their sugar scoop.
Have a good trip. Give me a wave as you go past Hythe.

You are missing Studland Bay - great stop off anchorage from Dartmouth, and saves one hour in and out of Poole. Reasonable holding, and its free!

Re: What are the South Coast don\'t miss harbours?

Chatham is a big diversion for you unless you aren't in a hurry and want to use the Best Toilet Block in Britain (IMHO). We don't actually like marinas but will grudgingly admit that Chatham does have a splendid Bog Block.
Agree try a night at Harty Ferry (unless it's blowing hard esp NE), then the usual step-off point for London is Queenborough. A quiet enough and sheltered mooring.
Nice trip you're planning, wish I was doing it.

Poole, Newtown, Chichester if you want to anchor. Especially midweek when they're likely to be empty.

Re: What are the South Coast don\'t miss harbours?

Weymouth breaks the Dart-Poole leg provided you go close in to the Bill, if you go around the outside you might as well plug on to Studland / Poole.
