Hi All

A quick query. What material are old, perhaps 15-20year old Musto MPX jackets made of? I know they are breathable but not sure if they are Gortex if that old.

Any advice very appreciated.

If breathable, that age seems to indicate Goretex as far as I know; the newer and better materials were not around then.

Is there no label? Goretex insist that there is a label if Goretex is used - they are very strict about it and their licencing.

If label unreadable, can you feel a white 'rubbery' coating on the inside outer layer (perhaps under a meash?)

Goretex feels just like PTFE tape used in plumbing applications (same material) but Goretex sprayed onto fabric as a membrane.

Don't know if any of the following is of any use?

I find Grangers best.

I used to do a lot of hiking and found all the water repellent sprays / wash-in waterproofing gunk etc to be utterly useless, at least after the first few days. Grangers no better than any others. However Nicky Canvasworks did the most remarkable restoration job on my old sprayhood and the water beading on it is now as good as new. I've no idea what she used though, may ask her next time I have any similar work done.

I have a little foul weather experience and having used most brands (because I refuse to throw expensive garments away) I have found Grangers to actually do what it states on the bottle.

Others have often posted that Grangers is the best.

A lady from Gore-Tex, whilst responding to a complaint about a Gore-Tex garment under the 'lifetime waranty' that she squirreled out of owing to 'wear and tear' sent me free of charge "the best re-proofing material her company believed in" - Grangers.

Spray hoods made from different materials than coats absorb liquid better than coats and are more easily restored.

My MPX jacket from 2001 has large sewn-on patches declaring "MPX using Gore-tex fabrics", possibly indicating that Gore-tex was new to the MPX range at about that time.
