What are fast trawlers all about?

I can understand the concept of a big displacment trawler doing about 8 knots efficiently. I am getting impression that a so called "fast" trawler is just the same boat with big ***** off engines. Would I be correct in thinking that these are not exactly fuel concious. Would it not make more sense to have a faster hull like a displacement cat rather than bigger engines to go faster. Am I missing something having these wretched thoughts?? I am into cats commercially for the record.

I cant understand why these types of boats are popular Why would anyone build a Sherman tank and then want to make it go like a Porsche. I cant even begin to imagine how much fuel they burn. I would imagine they are uncomfortable at speed and throw a hell of a wash. Surely boating is inefficient enough without these horrors. I think these deserve to be the first relics if there is ever to be a greener age.

I would guess that these are the same sort of people who buy sport versions of Range Rover, or a Ferrarri 4WD Cayenne.

As the owner of an old style displacement trawler type thingie! I also look at the new style "fast trawler" with the same distain that you seem too.

I cant understand why they would want the look of a trawler with the performance of semi displacement, it would be better to have the real thing (sport boat) if you want to go everywhere fast. The joy of a trawler is to slow down and enjoy the ride and I know thats not everybodys idea of cruising/sailing.

Your correct they do throw a large wake but they are not uncomfortable, probably due to the weight.

I'm with you on this one, ban them, make people buy the real thing and keep the value in mine! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Am I smelling something whiffy here?...can't see where you are coming from, semi displacement is semi displacement regardless of what shape the topsides are be they trawler, Nelson or fishy boat type thing. Are you saying ban semi displacement, slippery slope that one.

For the record just fitting bigger F*** off engines in a displacement boat won't make it go any faster just push a lot more water around as it digs itself further and further into the water.

Personally I like semi disp trawlers, take a look at the Fleming 55, a simply beautifully engineered vessel that can achieve 20 knts with just twin 450 Cummins which is pretty darn efficient motoring for a 55' beamy mobo by any standards.

OK - lets start a campaign to ban them. I want MBM involved.

Save red and ban obscene boat campaign.

OK lets compare 55 Fleming with deancat Jag 53 (yes I am involved with - wish there were more like it) 16m LOA 7.1 beam /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif 20 knots with 350 hp engines. Simply acres and acres more space with much smaller engines. If Fleming 55 is the best example of the beast then I am not impressed.

you call this an obscene boat /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif are you ill ????

Holy mother of God /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif......

is that the best you can come up with aesthetically?, I'll take the extra 200 hp and have a proper boat thanks.........

I've been on Martin's Flemming, and it's gorgeous.

This poster is just trying to drum up business by constantly posting about his cat products. In the long run it will only harm his business, as his intentions are clear.

mmm Probably because there are not many motorcatamaran suppliers in UK at the moment. Cats are one of my main interests and it presumably adds a different dimension to the forum. Cant think of many original threads outside my specialism. If the post had been on a 44ft trawler I would have compared it with the lagoon 43 trawler cat or a Transcat 43. I declare my interest in every thread and try to create a discussion point - genuinely interested in others views. Is that not what a forum is for - different opinions. If I cant post an opinion after declaring my interests I may as forget posting at all.

With you on this one ,think Vic has got His Tiger in the wrong think tank! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Think He should have signed the post "Envious of Emsworth".
I,d give The Wifes right arm for a Fleming!

for the simple reason that your posts continually come across as ads? Your latest being no exception. You don't provide anything to the forum, other than advertising your products

Did not say the Fleming did not look nice using all that power trying to get over is bow wave. Should it not try and stick around 9 knots like a trawler boat is designed to do.
