Well I read a lot of comments about problems, so I thought to provide some good feedback for once. And I am doing it by touching iron (which will give a clue on my nationality ...).

I purchased my Bavaria 42 Crusier in December last year when the engine had about 550 hours. The transmission is a 130S Saildrive with the standard Volvo fixed 3 blade propeller.

Yesterday I came around 800 hours.

What an engine! I can cruise at 6 kts with 1700 revs using an average of 3lt/hour (Volvo declares 6lt at 2000 recommended cruising revs). The engine runs quiet and extremely reliable for days on end. No smoke of any sort at any revs. If I push it at 3000 revs (which is the limit) the boat does over 8kts, but it is not recommended to hold that for long.

Glad to hear it.

I bought one of these engines last month (attached to a slightly smaller Bavaria), haven't really put it through its paces yet, but am interested in your comments about rpm and lph.

My old boat didn't have a rev counter so I was never sure about how hard I was gunning it. I will bear your numbers in mind next time we take her out.

Just make sure you never cruise over 2000 revs and you will be fine. It is a really powerful engine at low revs and up to 2000.

If you have a smaller boat you should be able to hold 1500 revs cruise and make even 2lt/h. Every 100 hours run it at 3000 for 8 minutes which will feel an hour because of the noise and vibration, but will be good to clear the carbon deposits. Do not run high revs in neutral!
