This weekend I reconnected the power cable of my Eberspacher heater (it has been disconnected for at least 18 months), turned it on and it worked without even having to run the engine to boost the voltage....What am I doing wrong!!

There must be something wrong with it ! Ebers never work. I suggest you call your local agent out anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can't promise to sort it, what model is it? I know the D4 quite well. If you can get it out and leave it with me, I may be able to help. You will need to replace my service kit and provide red wine rather than beer!

Loads of people seem to have trouble with Eberspacher, while many others find them really good. I have not seen anyone suggesting the use of the self test diagnostics. When we had problems this told use what was wrong, we replaced the part and it worked really well again. If you don't have the instruction book then I can tell you how to self test the model we have. Yours may be the same.

.. I think its the D4 .. it normally woorks OK .. but I've noticed I seem to have problems whenever I bung some SOltron in the diesel .. maybe just coincidence?

I appologise for my sarcasm, but I dont see why so many people have problems with their heaters, but I would add if anyone has the original type of inline fuse holders with the continental type of fuse with conical ends and exposed element, they would be well advised to replace it with a blade type fuse and holder as they offer better long term reliabilty.

I agree with Gibbo26 - the main trouble I have had with my Eber (recon lorry one) is the fuse - a minor crack dropping the voltage so it was erratic then failed on a cold night at anchor & we ran out of gas so couldnt use that - SWMBO was most frigid!!!

Likewise had problems with the fuse carrier - something was overheating in it causing the fuse cartridge to melt slightly causing a loss in good connection. Replcaed with a bulkhead mounted blade fuse holder.

I have long stopped using soltron or indeed anything else for the moment. Fuel set is recommended by Eber, and I have some around somewhere, but havent used it yet. So far me fuel is nice and clean with nothing added, and I think that's what ebers like best.

Same thing happened to mine. I replaced the old fuse with a blade type fuse holder and that melted as well. The fuse did not blow, but the plastic parts just melted. I was told that it was caused by low voltage. Then the heater stopped working, even though I was plugged into shorepower at the time. Took it into the local agent who tested it on the bench and said it worked fine. Haven't had a chance to try it out on the boat, but if it is still causing trouble I will be looking at the power supply.
