I am refurbishing my "2inch Non-Choke" pump. Could any one please advise:
A) a source for the black rubber balls which act as the non- return valve (they are about 1.25" dia.) Whale cannot help.
B)Whether a circlip was used to retain a bush in the top cap of the pump through which the plunger travels vertically (mine has an internal groove in the inside central boss about 1" I/D). If so are non ferrous Circlips available in small qtys and where from.
Marks wil be awarded for part answers and a bonus for disclosing the source of:
C) "D" section Brass/Bronze strip .500"wide and .187" thick at max point, used to protect thresholds of companionways etc. I need about 70".

Many thanks for the responses to above. W J Gilmore were a little difficult to contact though were very helpful when I did get through. They stock service kits but unfortunately are unable to supply the Black Rubber Ball that forms the seal in the NRV.They had a batch made but these were not satisfactory (the two halves of the mould were not concentric).
So if anyone knows of a rubber ball about 1.25 dia. (childs perhaps) I would be pleased to hear of it. It does not need to be solid as lead shot could be added to ensure it did float.

Have you had any luck with this problem? I'm still trying to find the balls without success

I just had a brainwave apart from the very useful suggestion about a squash ball, I have just found a 'broken' computer mouse and the ball was rolling around on the floor!

As I was reassembling it when I remembered this thread and had to pen a quick reply. :)

The ball is 1.1" diameter and quite solid, possibly with a metal inner section giving it a bit of weight unlike a squash ball which 'squash'

You might have a similar mouse which can do the job either temporarily or more permanently until a more suitable solution comes along? ;)

Hi
These super-full choke tubes have been specifically bored to deliver dense, full patterns at both short and long ranges. Crafted of aircraft stainless steel with a blued non-reflective finish. Knurled for easy installation and removal. Non-ported. Lifetime warranty. 12 gauge only.

How to disassemble ?

Hi there,

I also have a Whale 2" non choke pump, brass with a flush mounted operating lever, on my 1959 bilge keel sloop.
I've taken it from the boat because I'm putting on a new deck, and I thought I might just as well try to save the Whale pump. It's been out of operation for quite a number of years. Now my first question is: how to take this pump apart? If anyone has some hints&tips, I'ld be very happy!

Not sure about the "flush lever", mine operates rather like an old style bicycle pump, if so:
A) the top unscrews and the " piston" pulls out. The piston incorporates a non-return valve comprising a ball, a seating to which is attached a cage to retain the ball.
B) at the bottom of the cylinder is a simular non-return valve which is intended to be removable.
The problem is that dirt builds up around the inside of the bottom of the cylinder and B) will not come out.
The bottom of the pump does not unscrew it is soft soldered on. In order to replace the bottom ball I un-soldered it.
I have found a source of 30 mm Nitrile Rubber balls : Precision Plastic Ball Co. tel 01943 831166 at £1.75 each min order of £ 30. However if you speak nicely to the lady on sales she may send you a couple as samples in exchange for a book of first class stamps.
I tried to get Gilmore to get a stock in but without success.
Good luck. VITALBA
