Whale 1-1/4\" Brass Bilge Pump

I have one of these pumps and have just overhauled it but I need one essential rubber seal and can't get one.

It is called on the drawing a "Gland U Packing". It is a U seal or lip seal made of black rubber nitrile or similar. It's job is to seal around the pump plunger shaft and prevent water escaping around the rod.

The inside diameter is 3/8" and the outside diameter is 5/8".

The original makers, Munster-Sims Ltd, no longer supply spares for their old pumps and handed over that side of the business to Mr W.J.Gilmore of Newtonards. He has supplied all the other parts I needed to overhaul the pump but he has no stock of this Gland U Seal and can't get any more. So I am stuck.

Anyone got one they would sell me?

Hasve you tried other seal manufacturers, with the actual size and any number there on?

There is no number on it and I haven't approached any manufacturers because I assumed they would only be interested in an order for thousands and I only need one [plus one or two spares, if possible!].

Do you have any manufacturers in mind, who might help?

Maybe try taking it along to a Brown Brothers outlet, for car parts, you never know, often these things are universal types. Are there any bearing/seal suppliers on your yellow pages?

A "Gland U Packing" was the old type of seal on hydralic cylinders. Try a hydralic seal supplier.

Measure it using the new-fangled metric mm things, then look for shaft dia,outer dia,depth , like 12247, where shaft is 12mm, body hole is 24 mm and depth of seal is 7mm. (the above is for a volvo md11d) they cost pennies from hydraulic suppliers and pounds from marine suppliers. (try the net)
