Weymouth Lasers - Safety Hazard?

Lashing ropes and smashing timbers
Flashing Heat Rays pierced the deck
Dashing hopes for our deliverance
As we watched the sinking wreck
With the smoke of battle clearing
Over graves in waves defiled
Slowly disappearing
Farewell Thunder Child!
Slowly disappearing
Farewell Thunder Child!
Farewell Thunder Child!
Farewell Thunder Child!

;)

In all seriousness, with the lasers pointed down at the water I can't see their being much issue until you are very close in, by which point they probably cause less glare than the seafront lights...

Rant withheld.

What complete and utter tosh and a total waste of money. I wonder how many nurses or teachers could have been employed for the cost of designing, testing and installing those daft things?

Arts programs for deprived areas are being cut - yet those two chancers get a big fat wedge to basically take some 1990s club lighting and plonk it on top of some fancy poles? Grr.

(And yes - that was with the rant withheld.)

You can be sure that Health and Safety have been through this one in detail to ensure that the laser irradiance is below the allowed limits in areas where there is any risk of direct eye exposure.

Laser light show

I think you will find that ultimately this show adds to the tourist attraction for Weymouth and will pay for itself. I think you will find the whole olympic experience pretty much the same. Superficially a waste of money but long term investment. (or at least I hope it is) It didn't do Greece much good did it? Yet for Sydney 2000 I think it was ultimately a good thing.
good luck with the olympics olewill

The year before last, I was painted by a bright red laser whilst off Falmouth one night. Someone had fired it from approximately Pendennis point and despite me being in the region of August Rock it was incredibly bright and disruptive. I must add that this was clearly a hand held unit as whoever it was had quite a job holding it on me. The "attack" lasted for about 30 seconds, in which time I was zapped several times. I realised what it was and kept my eyes shut. I did notify the coastguard who went to look for whoever it was (they're based on Pendennis point for those that don't know) but with no success.
Pilots have also been attacked with lasers when on approach to airports by little chavs with relatively powerful lasers bought over the internet and the police helicopter gets it regularly which is why I notified the coastguard..... Wouldn't want shipping being zapped on its way into and out of a busy harbour now would we!
I would add that this was a deliberate effort to paint my boat with the laser and not a result of any type of show where generally the lasers are fired skywards a la Jean Michelle Jarre. I think the Laser show will be fine from out at sea and quite a spectacle for anyone who is lucky enough to see it from such a vantage point.

Lasers at weymouth

The lasers are safe. If you get into the projected effects then I would be more concerned about you being shipwrecked, as they are safe at less than a third of a kick from the esplanade. Do contact the harbour master if you have specific concerns.
