We\'ve made it

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids
in the 50's, 60's, and 70's probably shouldn't have survived.

Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which
was promptly chewed and licked.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or
cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and fluorescent
'clackers' on our wheels.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding
in the passenger seat was a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the
same.

We ate dripping sandwiches, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop
with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always
outside playing.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no one
actually died from this.

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top
speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running
into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were
back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us all day and no one
minded.

We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99
channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones,
no personal computers, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends and we went
outside and found them.

We played elastics and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really
hurt.

We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no
lawsuits. They were accidents. We learnt not to do the same thing again.

We had fights, punched each other hard and got black and blue and we
learned to get over it.

We walked to friend's homes.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate live stuff, and
although we were told it would happen, we did not have very many eyes out,
nor did the live stuff live inside us forever.

We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.

Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem
solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of
innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and
responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

And you're one of them. Congratulations!

Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as real
kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.

Re: We\'ve made it

What about firework night!!!

We'd build our own bonfires, have sparklers that lasted long enough to write your name in the darkness.
Go collecting birds eggs, not stolen cars.
Joy riding was a good day out on your push bike.
Yellow stained fingers was gotten from sherbert not nicoteen.
Cadbury's dairy milk chocolate had a PINT and a half in every bar not a glass and a half.
Giant gob stoppers! How did we survive them?
Two heavy solid plastic brightly coloured balls hanging from string that, as you moved your arm up and down clacked together and would break any bone that got in their way. Remember them?
Spud guns?
Catapaults?

I could go on an on an on..

Re: We\'ve made it

You were lucky, we couldn't afford such luxuries. My paper round money went on my mother's gin. What my Grandma earned from the sailors down the docks went of my grandpa's gambling. I had no shoes and had to wear my sister's hand me downs which she had got in the 1st place by sleeping with the rag & bone man. My father who ever he was I never knew excepting that he never paid for the short timer he had with my mum. 18 of us lived in a converted Kellogs Cornflake box.... but in our own way we were happy.

Fred,

You got it spot on, quote from my Fathers Card this year , Front page "Dad you/ve always treated me with respect" inside "Good move because one day I/ll be choosing your nursing home!" If I didnt respect his mother I would call him a "ba***rd".

Re: We\'ve made it

Ok, I was showing off, you caught me out. I really just used to watch the posh kids do all these things and sit in my open sess pit dreaming of living in a Kellogs box.

:))

You all better now Byron?

That's me to a T!!!

However, you forgot the.... built large bonfires and sometimes got burned - but learnt from it.

Cooked food stolen from the local Co-op on said bonfire and ate it before it was cooked properly.

Built dens from asbestos sheet and never died from this.

Went scrumping for fruit and if we got caught, then more fool us, 'cos we should have run harder, faster, and further.

Hitched lifts with totally unknown truck drivers - it was a good way of getting home when you knew full well you were 3 hours late for tea.

Played in streams and rivers and mud banks that never see children these days.

Made bows, arrows and spears to fight our enemies in the street down the way - but no one really got hurt.

Road on the back of horses and cows by dropping out of a tree onto their backs and seeing how long you could stay on - longest wins!

Played on rubbish tips where a great find was a television tube that you could implode with a brick.

Explored old houses and building sites with the absolute knowledge that someone would come round to chase you off. Good running skills required once more.

Collected conkers from trees that never see kids any more.

Played marbles in the play ground every year at the same time - usually around spring.

Rifled rubbish tips for old mopeds and spares for same and made one that worked - then rode it around illegally.

I hate playstations / mobiles / crappy televion / technology for technology's sake, etc etc.
