Hello to all,

I have the port side keel off My Pentland for crack repairs to the stub and rebedding and would like to change out the keel studs as well at the same time.

My problem is that I will be away from the boat for three more weeks and was wondering if any of you fine people would know what thread size my 1974 Pentland would have please?

Once I know the thread size I can order the gear to get these studs in action as soon as I get the chance.

I'll need the size of the trailing end (smaller) stud as well please?

If anyone can give me full details of the both stud sizes (lengths overall, threaded portion lengths, diameters, metric or imperial etc..) I'd be very grateful.

I have been in contact with a couple of people about the sizes but I am getting conflicting stories.

I now wish that I had've paid more attention to the studs when I dropped the keel off!! Sorry!! I promise to try harder in the future!!

Any information would be appreciated.

All the very best,
Alan....................

Hello again,

Many thanks for your replies so far.

Paddingtonbear: I posted the same thread on the WOA forum at the same time as I posted in here. Thanks for your thoughts though, much appreciated!

Jumbleduck: Was your 1976 Westerly bigger or smaller than the 31 footers please? Thanks for your input, also much appreciated!

All the very best,
Alan...............

Ten feet smaller, so I didn't intend my comment as more than an indication that Westerly weren't averse to Whitworth.

It might be worth asking Trafalgar Yacht Services (http://www.westerly-yachts.co.uk/) as they are the main suppliers of Westerly spares and also do a lot of Westerly brokerage.

Hello again JumbleDuck,

I've already had a reply from Caroline Hardy at Trafalgar saying that she was not sure of the size and dimensions but believed the threads to be imperial, Thanks!

Alan...........

On Chaka there are three sizes 1/2 BSW 3/4 BSW 1" BSW all stainless and the ones I have taken out seem fine and never wet. I pull them one by one afloat.

After an embarrassing moment for one tidy sailor elsewhere on the river please do not be too tidy and methodical and line up the sides of the square washers
like soldiers before tightening up keel bolts . Place them with points to NSEW as this helps prevent forming a shear line. One Centaur lost one of its newly rebedded
keels soon after the job was done due to this type of failure. I believe the Westerly website does mention this possibility.

Hello again to all,

This wee post is just to thank the contributors to my thread and to let you know that I now have the sizes that I need for my 1974 Westerly Pentland ketch keel studs.

The Pentland has, in each bilge keel, eight 1"BSW (British Standard Whitworth) marine grade stainless 316 engineers studs, each stud is 5 1/4" (134mm) in length, the threaded portion that screws into the keel is threaded to 2 3/4" (70mm) and the threaded portion that comes through the keel stub and accepts the washer, nut and locking nut is threaded to 2" (50mm).

The smaller stud that is fitted onto the back or trailing edge is the same length and threaded portion lengths as the eight larger studs but it is only 3/4" in its diameter, so as if by magic it has a 3/4" BSW thread cut in it.

If anyone has the need to find these studs, I'll take this opportunity to recommend R.A.K fasteners who are located in Bloxwich, Wallsall. Hassle free, friendly service and very competitive prices.

Thanks again,
All the very best,
Alan................
