I discovered the Volvo gearbox splines article on the Westerley Owner site is not free accessible anymore.
Is there a Westerley Owner member who can sent me the article with the pictures ?

You can sent it to glsf91 @ gmail . com

Many thanks in advance.
John

I suspect that they have moved into the technical section for WOA members only - Moody Owners did the same to encourage membership.

I threw it away once I did the job last winter to my boat and a friend's.

It is crucial to have a look for engine numbers up to 2300059128 - my 1988 engine was hanging on to the gearbox splines by its fingernails!

Look at DB Marine website for more info of their splendid fix.

The WOA site has been updated recently....there is a new technical section, but the article on the splines issue seems to have been left out .

I'd be happy to answer questions about the checking of splines and getting the fix done. Here's what they look like when knackered - worn to points. The splines fit into a carrier ring that is bolted to flywheel and that was similarly worn so that the points were just meshing. That's why they will let go at some point as the meat on the splines/carrier has worn away, creating that characteristic red dust that you can see as soon as you pull the gearbox back a bit.

I have removed my saildrive now. There was some red dust which I removed.
See the picture for the result. I made a black circle where you can see some worn.
Only it is not as much as on your picture. On your picture it looks like half of a spline is gone. On my shaft it is just very thin what is gone. On my (not very good) picture it looks it is 0.5 mm but that is not the case
Don't know if I have to make the modification now or to wait a few years.

Volvo Penta modification...

As your splines are showing little wear, it might be worth your while fitting the Volvo Penta modification (assuming your engine is prior to number 2300059128). The VP kit comprises a new carrier plate which is fitted to the flywheel on cushioned mounts. It's quick and easy to fit, and should reduce spline wear in future. I fitted the kit to my 2003 several years ago, at which time my splines were showing similar wear to yours.

Hi, if you PM your email address I have some useful info on the spline problem. I checked mine a few years ago, it looked like yours and the Volvo mod had been fitted.

The red dust is caused by chittering of the splines and the carrier ring so there will be similar wear on the carrier. As there is still a lot of meat on your splines then the cheaper Volvo fix suggested would probably be enough. There will still be some slight movement though I suspect as the new Volvo carrier must be sized for splines that have no wear. Should be good for years.

The DB Marine fix also has cushions on the carrier. It is a well engineered fix that has no movement but it was £360 last winter.
