I am at present looking at purchasing one of these vessels, and was wondering if anybody knew of common problem areas I should be looking out for when examining craft.

I have heard there are three common problems but have failed to identify any of these as yet.

I used to crew on a Konsort which was raced with some success in the Irish Sea, Bangor Week and the Clyde (Midnight Star)
Great Boat, loads of room, sailed well (fin keel) and was entirely predictable - i.e. no bad habits. I cannot think of any problems but if you are buying then a survey should highlight any issues with that particular boat.

I looked at a Konsort a couple of years back, but plumped for a Moody 31. Similar family caravan, but a bit more space for a little more money, Not much to choose between them, so if you find a good example Konsort, go for it.

Had a Konsort in the family for a few years, a really good one that gave no trouble at all and provided the means for our first Channel crossings. Ditto its Bukh 20hp diesel. Only glitch I can remember was the trailing tips of the bilge keels had an acute angle and both were pinged off on a launching trolley; problem solved by grinding the trailing tips to a more rounded shape.

During its production history Westerly went through a few changes that may or may not have impacted on quality, so as with any boat it would be worth keeping your eyes open and surveying well.

I've got a Konsort and cannot find anything to complain about.

One thing to look for, is to find out if the lower T terminals have been replaced in recent years. There was a case of these shearing. It happened to me, as mine had not been replaced. Mine are now bronze and not SS.

Headlining can be a problem as it was foam backed. Some older boats now find theres separting and drooping.

If the engine is original, it probably is a Bukh. If it has been serviced properly, there will be no worries there. A point to look for, is the exhause/water inlet. These can sometimes fracture. Check for cracks in the cast metal pipe.

Check under the cabin lockers to see if the bilge keels bolts are watertight (supposing it is a bilge keeler).

That's about all I can think of, but do send a message to

for more info.

Philip
