Claymore, Thanks. I will look out for this although I don't see any trace of a test in the search facility for the copyshop. Did you get my PM or did I make a mess of sending it?
YM published a 3 page boat test of the Corsair in Jan '84, with YW publishing a 5 page test the same month. We looked at Corsairs and I recall that the Mk1 had the aft berths fore and aft. The Mk 2 had an athwartships aft berth with, I think, a larger aft heads. Most were sloops, some ketches were built - indeed, a ketch version was featured on the front of the brochure for the Mk2. I've never sailed one although I have raced against them. I would strongly recommend sailing one before committing yourself. My personal opinion as that they would benefit from a slightly deeper keel a la Oceanlord.
Have you tried the Westerly Owners Association? Hope this is of some help.
I have a corsair Mk2 1988 as far as I know there has not been a ketch or a bilge keel version of the corsair. I have had mine for 10 years now and have sailed some 30k nm or there abouts, a great deal of those miles have been single handed and I love my boat, and wouldnt change her. I have the head off the engine at the moment the exhaust valves need re grinding hence los of compression poor starting, it has the volvo penta 2003 I have inmast reefing and furling headsail, she sails a treat has loads of space below unfortunatly she has osmosis which I hope to put right soon, I now (last two seasons) use her to do skippered charter and she does this very well. I have the aft cabin as my home office etc and my four clients have the forepeek saloon and pilot berth to chose from. If I can offer any more reasons why you should have one email me

There was very little difference between the Mk1 and Mk2 versions. The aft berths were transverse in both. The aft heads was essentially the same size. The Mk2 (introduced around 85 or 86??) had a friendlier saloon, with radiussed corners to the seating around the table, and with louvred locker doors. Otherwise, there was very little difference.
The Corsair was available in either sloop or ketch rigs. Don't even consider a ketch - I owned one, and it was far from satisfactory!
The Corsair is a large, fairly robust, honestly-built cruiser. I always felt safe in mine.
If you're interested, I have brochures for both the Mk1 and Mk2 versions, which I'll happily scan and e-mail to you if you'd like to PM me with your e-mail address.
Hi Pvb you amaze me I didnt think the corsair was made in any other rig than sloop, where was the missen mast mounted, i guess there must have been a mast step down through the aft cabin was yours later than 1987
Regards Mike
Mike, the mizzen was deck-stepped just in front of the hatch for the aft cabin. There wasn't a support post in the aft cabin, so I guess there would have been some sort of strengthening beam in the deck moulding.
My Corsair was built in July 86, but not commissioned until August 87.
You certainly don't see many ketch versions - probably because the rig didn't seem to work very well! Also, at the time, newer and better sail-handling systems were coming on to the market, making larger sloops easier to handle and effectively destroying the attraction of the ketch. Interestingly, the photos in the Mk2 Corsair brochure show the ketch rig. If you'd like me to e-mail the scans to you, PM me with your address.
