Westerly Centaur Mast cleaning

Morning all,


Am heavily involved in a Centaur project. The mast and boom are in a poor state and in need of tlc. Would like some advice on the best way to clean them up, can they be re-painted if so what is the best paint to use .

Baby Oil is good for general cleaning if the anodising is in a good state. However, if the mast is badly scratched it might be a better idea to paint it. On my first 'boat-with-a-lid' a Vivacity 20 I had painted the mast black using Hammerite or something similar. This was some 18 years ago; as far as I know the same paint is still there although it could do with a fresh coat. Sold that boat to a friend when I bought a Centaur (CR1279) and we are still good friends.

BTW there is a Westerly Owners' group on Yahoo and in it there is a mine of information about Centaurs. My photos are still there (I think). Boat was called "Cyano". I would heartily recommend having a look at that group; some very helpful people there.

Alloy wheel cleaner might help. I found that on an old mast the anodising seems to go very dark and the wheel cleaner did little for it but if yours is not the same it could be worth a try.
