West Portugal - Weatheronline - Seapart v West Coast

Hi, (again)

Fogbound in Lexoies, Portugal but it seems to be clearing.

However.. looking at

http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/sail.htm

Select Europe...Atlantic...Portugal West... Seapart or westcoast for the pages I am looking at.

it tells me that the wind in the seapart will be 4-5 gusting 37mph, but in the westcoast part it will be merely 3-4.

Anyone know how far out to sea the seapart starts, (longitude?).

If we're in westcoast, we go... if the seapart, we dont. Due to the northerly winds, we may gybe out to 10 degrees west, 39.23 degrees North, just outside the shipping lane off Peniche.

I would look at www.meteo.pt.

Weatheronline is interesting, but it is just a computer generated forecast - treat with caution.

Try bouyweather.com, windguru and or meteoparapente which also gives acces to theyr. Be very vary of that strecht of coastline. We had an almost knockdown, 5 miles off and 15 north of cape Vincent. The wind went from a regular 15-20, straight to 30 and 45 knots within 2mins. At one point we had 60 knots over the masthead and windvane sounded like a jet engine. Fortunately, more by luck then good judgement, we had 3 reefs in the main and small working jib otherwise we would have been in very serious trouble. The only pre warning we had was a slightly dark offshore haze and constant strong gusts of really hot wind coming off the shore followed by short rain squalls containing sand. Also reef down well around the Capes, particulalry the one before Lisbon. If there is anything like a med breeze it accelerate to twice that speed!. Best of luck.
