Planning a quick visit today with a view to getting ashore, having a walk, some lunch and then back across the river. All this as a gentle outing for timid wife. Can anybody advise on finding a mooring for a couple of hours and on the best way to contact the boatman (Ch37?). My pilot book is a bit dated!
Thanks

There are almost always free moorings in Mersea Quarters. Pick one up and call the boatman on Ch. 37 - Callsign YC1. He will be able to advise if it is OK to stay there and will direct you to another if it is not.

Some of the moorings are for commercial fishing boats. These generally have very long strops - watch out for them if you pass close to a buoy.

The one thing I can't be absolutely sure of is whether the launch does operate on weekdays, but I assume it does in the summer.

You can go closer in & moor between the piles opposite the hard (this is what I usually do). You need to find a pair without a connecting rope, and it's about £8 a night from West Mersea Marine who come and collect.

I like it there because it's much closer to the hard and generally a very interesting place to sit and watch what's going on.

Used the piles last October in a bit of a blow (singlehanded which was interesting ) as there wasn't a vacant mooring close to WMYC and the pair I picked didn't have mooring rings on the riser bars so I had to improvise.

West Mersea result!

Thanks for all the advice. We called on Ch 37 and were allocated an empty mooring just passed the packing shed. The lift ashore came along fairly quickly. The walk on the beach was good although the haddock and chips was even better. We had a long wait for the return trip to the boat because YC1 was very busy but met some nice folk on the hammerhead. All in all a really good day topped off by a superb but all too brief sail back across the river.

The whole thing obviously worked well because my wife regretted having to leave the boat!
