Hi
Just planning the bank holiday weekend with the help of Harber's East Coast Rivers. Looking at the West Mersea area, there is an anchorage marked in the Salcott Channel to the north west of Sunken Island (2m depth). There also seems to be quite a lot of oyster layings in the area and I am a little concerned that they may have extended and taken out the anchorage. I much prefer eating oysters to dropping a hook on them - can anyone provide an up-to-date appraisal of the anchorage?

Cheers

FWIW, I have a Club mooring in Salcott, and during occasional trips up to the head of the creek (to the church) I have noticed that the number of layings has increased dramatically. They sem to start almost as soon as the moorings end.

However, earlier this week there were a very large number of unoccupied moorings, as owners haven't launched yet.

Suggest you call up the West Mersea Yacht Club launchman, Geoff Wass, Callsign 'YC1' and I am sure he will be very helpful on advising which are likely to be unoccupied.

Hope it helps.

Follow what rudolph says regarding Jeff Wass. But my Club mooring which is last but one on the right, right at the top of Salcott will be free this weekend - I'm still on hard standing!. Right up at the end of the Creek, you are next to the layings but will have a most comfortable stay. It is a little way from the Jetty though! Suits a 32ft yacht and you should have sufficient water underneath you - but there will be plenty of other moorings free.
