Does anyone know of a register or similar where berth owners in the Med. can put their berths up for a year's sublet. While in Portugal I met two couples who had sub let berths from UK owners who were not using their berths due to one having sold his boat and the others were on a round the world cruise. Basically I am looking for a berth not too fussy where and thought there might be some one out there who has one to lease. Where would be a good place to look.

Look on the home page, rhs under 'featured section' and the berth exchange is at the bottom. Also try www.rentamooring.com and look in the back of Februarys Yachting World and Monthly where there were acouple of private ads for berths. I have done quite a bit of research on berth prices/availability in the Balearics so if you need any other info let me know.

First of all to say that our research was only on the Balearics, as with 3 youngish children and short half-term holidays we wanted to be moored in our preferred cruising ground. I know the mainland including Barcelona would be cheaper but it didn't make sense for us. We accept a higher price for convenience. The other thing to say is that from our experience on the Algarve in high season it was cheaper to keep the boat our of the water when we were not using it. However, this is not so much the case in the Balearics (and probably the Med in general?) presumably due to the shortage of hardstanding areas.

We e-mailed/faxed various marinas in Oct/Nov last year and most didn't reply. In January I set about phoning a few of them and was relieved to find their English was excellent (am still doing a basic Spanish course to help with communications!)

All the prices are for a 14m boat:

Majorca

Andraitx Oct - May 450 Euros pm June - Sept 940 Euros pm
through www.sirenasailing.com (James Letts) also offer guardianage and very helpful

Santa Ponsa 1,222 Euros pm only available June

RCN Palma 10,500 Euros pa on rentamooring.com

Porto Cristo 58 Euros per day - reservable. No long term rates/berths available.

Alcudiar 757 Euros pm (2004 price - may not have space in 2005, also try Nautica Mahon, an English company who offer guardianage and will also ahve berths in Alcudiar)

Travel Lift Palma 3072 Euros for 2 months out of the water! Rate increases the longer you are out. Not available in winter.

Menorca

Marina Menorca - may have a few spaces, won't know until March

Sunseeker Menorca - putting in new pontoons along the front, don't know rate yet but will have space

Pedro's boat centre - out of the water 1800 Euros for 2 montsh in all

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, I've kept a copy on my hard drive. I've been getting much the same story for Italy (our first choice)..." very fully booked 'maybe' we will have a space, contact us in March...."
