Does anyone use west marine or similar for gear? I've heard if it's sent to "yacht in transit" then no duty is charged. (In europe while cruising). I'm after a life raft amongst other things and not sure wether to go for mail order or see if I can get a deal at London boat show. After sales service is another factor. Any views?

TIA

Yacht in Transit only works outside the EU.. It works from USA to Gibraltar, Morocco, or any other non EU country.

Quite a lot of boats re-fit in Gib for just this reason but I would check out with their custom department again -- things do change in Gibraltar and they are quite protectionist...

Yacht in Transit works perfectly everywhere in the world except EU countries for EU boats

Lifreafts are 'hazardous material' (compressed gas and pyrotechnics/flares) and therefore not suitable, without lots of red tape, for airfreight. Therefore if you are in a hurry to get it, I'd recommend you buy locally.
